About this deal

Low Noise Design - minimise noise and maximise comfort by optimising the refrigeration and air duct systems. The noise is as low as 39dB. The Dehumidifier also uses reciprocating compressor technology allowing less vibration to effectively reducing the noise level. Each dehumidifier ran for two hours at its highest fan setting and set to continuous running mode. If that wasn’t available, we set the humidistat to the lowest possible relative humidity level. All dehumidifiers can run in a stand-alone mode where all the water is collected in the reservoir. This means regularly carrying the reservoir to the nearest drain or sink and pouring it out.

Compressor dehumidifiers work in much the same way as a fridge or freezer. They draw in air and cool it, condensing any moisture as it passes across a refrigerated coil. The water then drips off into a water tank below, while the air is reheated and released into the room. Compressor dehumidifiers can be noisy and may use more energy than other types, although new compressor technology and refrigerants are bringing improvements on both counts. They’re most efficient at warmer temperatures of 20°C and above, and your best bet if you need to remove lots of moisture from a larger space. A small humidifier removes 20 to 25 pints of moisture at 65°F, or 30 to 40 pints at 80°F (about 400 to 600-plus square feet). High-capacity dehumidifiers are usually power-hungry and noisy, but the MeacoDry Arete One is designed to do more with less energy and a lower volume, topping out at 40dB during typical use and keeping consumption to around 200W. In fact, both figures fall dramatically as humidity levels start to drop. It’s an excellent dehumidifier for larger spaces and, unlike most compressor models, will work at temperatures of between 5 and 25°C. All dehumidifiers do the same basic job of removing excess moisture from the air. However, there are three different technologies that do all the hard work.

The verdict: Dehumidifiers

Because humidity is removed by cooling the air, dehumidifiers work best when it is warm. All the dehumidifiers we tested have minimum operating temperatures of around 40°F. This means they’ll work just fine in most basements. If you have an unconditioned space that gets colder than 40°F, compressor-based dehumidifiers won’t work for you. For effective cooling and humidity removal, the heat exchanger needs to be clean. If it gets dusty it won’t cool the air effectively to reduce the humidity. Dehumidifiers have filters to trap dirt before it hits the cooling coils. Midea are Introducing the MDDF-20DEN7-QA3 with room coverage up to 45 m2. The latest model in Meaco’s dehumidifier range is a compact version of the superb Arete One, dropping the extraction rate down to ten litres per day, but reducing the size of the unit to less than 50cm high. Not only is the Arete One 10L physically unobtrusive, but it’s also impressively quiet. While we measured noise levels of around 42dB with the fans running at full tilt, these rapidly decreased to well below 40dB, which is about as close as dehumidifiers get to silent. In its night mode, the Arete One 10L can go as low as 35dB.

Smart Dehumidification Technology - automatically control room humidity in a comfortable range (45%-55% according to room temperature) which inhibits bacteria growth. The damp reservoir can also be a home for mold or bacteria. A gentle wash with dish detergent will take care of that. Larger dehumidifiers give you extra capacity to cope with emergencies like leaks or spills that temporarily make your home more humid. Running costs vary widely depending on the amount of humidity your dehumidifier is dealing with. In our tests, we challenged the units with an extremely high humidity environment and ran them at their maximum fan settings. It’s difficult to exactly match pint capacity exactly to your square footage. In the real world, dehumidifying needs can vary throughout the year. Other types include desiccant dehumidifiers, which will use a water-absorbing material, and thermoelectric dehumidifiers, which operate with charged plates. Generally speaking, neither of these latter two types are as effective as condenser models, which is why we only recommend this type in our list. Just like the larger model, the 10L has a laundry mode to dry your washing, and can double as an air purifier with the bundled HEPA filter inserted – although we found it a little less effective in our air-purifying tests than most dedicated models. As a dehumidifier, it’s hard to fault, working efficiently in small and medium-sized rooms to reduce humidity levels and get rid of mould and moisture. Throw in the intuitive controls and easily removable water tank, and this is the best of the compact options, and ideal for smaller rooms and homes. Keep it running all day long and the costs could mount up, but this is an excellent dehumidifier for situations where a refrigerant model just won’t work. If you routinely move the units between rooms, particularly between floors, then you may want to go for several smaller units. A 20 pint unit would work well for most small rooms. How Do You Empty A Dehumidifier? Each model was assessed for how easy it was to use the controls. Portable dehumidifiers should also live up to their name and be easy to move! The reservoir also has a strong, comfortable carrying handle. The simple shape means that it’s easy to empty without spills.
