The London run of Flowers for Mrs Harris, a charming musical adaptation of Paul Gallico’s 1958 novella, has been a long time coming: the production began in Sheffield in 2016 and played in Chichester two years later. Now this tale of a Battersea-dwelling charwoman with big dreams finally lands near Ada Harris’s patch, at Riverside Studios in Hammersmith. Chichester Festival Theatre cast recording of the hugely acclaimed musical Flowers For Mrs Harris, with a book by Rachel Wagstaff, music and lyrics by Richard Taylor, based on the novel by Paul Gallico.But she is sure she is meant to have it so determination, skimping and saving and simply by believing that dreams can come true, after two years of dreaming, Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris. Paul William Gallico was born in New York City, on 26th July, 1897. His father was an Italian, and his mother came from Austria; they emigrated to New York in 1895. Buying the dress wasn’t as simple as she thought it would be. Well French fashion houses aren’t like London shops!

Last year, Gallico’s novella was adapted as a film starring Lesley Manville. The musical is arguably more reflective – gently underscoring that the dress Mrs Harris wants is really a stand-in for hope and connection in the face of loneliness and loss. In contrast to this, "The Dress Showing" in Act Two features a selection of modelled Dior style dresses. The expectations are high at this point in the show, due to the anticipation created by the characters themselves and party because we didn’t ever see the dress earlier in the beautiful first sighting moment. The dresses here should be impressive and showstopping, and although they are beautiful, some ill-fitting wardrobe moments take the magic away a little. The costumes by Sara Perks throughout the production are well considered and become an important part of each character’s personality. Flowers for Mrs Harris have announced the remaining cast that will star alongside Jenna Russell from 30 September to 26 November at the Riverside Studios. Ada is a hard-working cleaner serving the lives of others – her demanding clients. But when she spies a Christian Dior dress in Lady Dant’s wardrobe, everything changes: it’s “something to make you feel”, a burst of colour, of fantasy, amid the gloom of postwar London. So, Ada dedicates herself to buying her own Dior creation – not easy when it costs an entire year’s wages, and there are rigid class barriers to overcome. That’s Mrs Ada Harris, a widowed London cleaning lady. A practical woman and a reliable worker, she left her good friend Mrs Violet Butterfield to look after her clients while she was away.
