About this deal

This developer enables fine grain and excellent sharpness. It is a one-shot developer (i.e. can only be used once whereas others can be re-used). It is a developer which needs to be used relatively soon after being opened so is good for users who have a lot to develop or are regular developers. This is available as a 500ml item and used at 1+9 and 1+14 dilutions. This product is also available in a pre-measured sachet under the name ILFORD SIMPLICITY Film Developer. ILFOTEC LC29 I’ve developed hundreds of rolls of film over the last couple of years, and DD-X has been by far my favorite developer for most of that time. The results that this solution gets are second to none with faster films, which is one of the major reasons why I almost always keep a bottle of it on my shelf to this day. Ilfotec DD-X is the best developer for developing B&W film that is ISO 400 and above. This liquid-concentrate developer enhances shadow details, and creates images with rich tonality, making it one of the top options for pushing film without creating overly-grainy images. Maybe Ilford Ilfosol-3 Developer is the one for you – especially if you’re shooting on plastic cameras. In fact, the only developer on the market that pushes film better is Ilford’s Microphen, which is a niche developer that comes in powdered format rather than liquid.

This developer is highly concentrated and can be used in spirals, deep tanks, rotary processors and in roller transport processors. It is available as a 1L item and at a variety of different dilutions: 1+11, 1+15, 1+19, 1+31, 1+39, 1+47 and 1+79. Machine processing developers (for labs) ILFOTEC DD The main reason why this developer is still on the shelves today is because of just how good the results are with faster films. Which I’ve found to be true in my own use as well — the day that I truly started loving Ilford Delta 3200 was the once I started developing it with DD-X. The results were stunning compared to what I was used to getting with HC-110. This developer gives a best overall performance for all our film products. It enables fine grain, good speed (no loss) and has a smooth transition with tonal range from shadow detail through to bright highlight detail. It is also suitable for using in rotary processors. This is available as a 1L item and used at a 1+4 dilution. ILFOSOL 3 Film developers are a photographic chemical that turns your exposed film into working negatives as part of a processing workflow. (You will also need a stop bath and fixer - for more information on how to process your film or which chemistry to choose read our guides). This machine developer is primarily designed for use with ILFORD resin coated papers only in the ILFOLAB 2150 table top processor. It gives a neutral to slightly cool image tone and is available as part of a kit. The kit contains a 3L bottle of developer and a 3L bottle of fixer.But film developers all perform a little bit different. Some of them can make dramatic changes in the look of your images. DD-X is one of the most common, and most expensive developers on the market.

Some developers are made for commercial lab equipment such as replenished deep-tanks or machine film developers. As such they need high-output, maximum economy, fast processing speed and consistent quality. For most general users, including beginners, you will need a film developer that is compatible with spiral tanks or rotary processors. If you’ve looked at developing times on the Massive Dev Chart, you’ll have certainly noticed there is a developer called Ilfotec DD. DD is actually the same developer as DD-X, though it is formulated for use in labs where it’s possible to replenish the developer after each use. This machine developer is primarily designed for use with our resin coated papers in roller transport processors. It gives a neutral to slightly cool image tone and is available as a 5L item. It is designed to be used at temperatures of between 20-40C (68-104F) and at a 1+4 dilution.We have a broad range of both liquid and powder concentrate developers which are all compatible with our resin coated and fibre base paper products. Depending which developer is used, the image tones can vary from neutral to warm. The last downside is that DD-X is not an environmentally-friendly chemical. Like most developers, DD-X made from the phenols dimezone and hydroquinone, which come from the petrochemical industry. It’s not safe to place in a septic tank and is known to be toxic to aquatic life downstream.

Powder developers require a little more time and care to prepare compared with liquid developers. We generally recommended these for photographers who are already comfortable with using chemistry. Once you are familiar with handling powder chemistry, they can be more economical to use.A box containing just enough chemicals to develop, stop, fix and wash 2 x 35mm films or 1 x 120 roll, for a simple introduction to B&W film developing. Perhaps the best part about using DD-X, is that it gives users the maximum amount of tonality on their negatives. That means that the negatives will look relatively flat when compared to other developers like Rodinal or pyro-based developers. But in return, you’ll get negatives that can be edited to create the desired level of contrast. A single 1L bottle isn’t that expensive, but when you consider that it requires a 1+4 dilution, that means you’re only getting 10 cycles out of a single bottle. For example, Rodinal, which usually comes in a 500ml bottle at a cheaper price, can develop up to 50 rounds, totaling 100 rolls of 35mm film — all in a solution that doesn’t expire over time. That’s why I always recommend Rodinal (or Blazinal in Canad) to be the first film developer for new film photographers. Used for processing scientific products such as glass plates however, it is also the optimum developer to process our Ortho Plus film product and can be used to process sheet films. Depending on development time chosen, it will enable varying contrast levels to be achieved. It is suitable for spiral tanks and trays and available as a 5L item. It is used at a 1+4 dilution.
