About this deal

It hit me right at end, there were little bits throughout the book that my mind thought was weird or out of place and all questions that I'd had were then answered towards the end when all the dot-to-dots were completed. Fear not, it all ties back into the story and you cannot put the book down for the last 50 or so pages, but the initial thrill ebbs away a little in the middle. As the timeline from 1993 progresses Pope’s focus gradually turns to Nell and his continued refusal to accept her father’s innocence with his son, Aaron, still doing his bidding further down the line. I would like to thank Netgalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone for an advance copy of The Brighton Mermaid, a stand alone novel set in Brighton. Clearly a racist, Detective John Pope’s boorish arrogance and sneering venom quickly gravitates to Nell’s protective father, Mr Okorie, and his bullying and suspicion in turn have irrevocable effects for the entire Okorie family, making their journey to dysfunctional breakdown understandable. I stormed through this book in a day as I couldn't put it down until the secrets contained in the twisty plot revealed themselves. Someone is hell-bent on the truth not coming out, seeming to know all her next steps and her paranoia increases. I’m writing this review from a very interesting place today, because I have just come away from a weekend spent at the Romantic Novelists’ Association conference in Lancaster where one of the highlights of the weekend for me was listening to Dorothy Koomson in conversation about her writing with RNA Chair, Alison May.

The story is told from two perspectives – sisters Nell and Macy – and across a time span of 25 years. Someone seems to be watching her every move, and soon she starts to wonder who in her life she can actually trust. Suffice to say though, they pretty much all involve an absolutely vile and despicable character that made my skin crawl. This will creep its way under your skin and stay there long after you finish the final few gut-twisting chapters.

I'm sitting in bed, hearing voices outside thinking, ahhhh that could be me in the River Thames next. Macy is annoying as a character with untreated OCD and anxiety issues but obviously well enough drawn to provoke a reaction. The story begins twenty-five years ago; it’s 1993 in Brighton Beach and Nell and Jude are teenagers. It tool me a little while to get into this excellent thriller and might have given up if I was not already a Dorothy Koomson fan.

Nell's dad comes to collect them from the police station and tries to stop the policeman in charge 'bullying' the girls. Nell and Jude’s lives change overnight and whilst Nell struggles to understand why the police are convinced that she and her family have something to do with the body, Jude disappears. Loved the tantalising secrets and viewpoints of the different characters on other characters which kept you off-balance and guessing all the way through and I did not guess what it was all about or who could be trusted until the reveal which was good. However, their character development is incredibly intriguing and often made me almost forget about the mysteries that needed solving. Brighton Beach, 1993 Teenagers Nell and Jude find the body of a young woman and when no one comes to claim her, she becomes known as the Brighton Mermaid.

It is quite unlike anything that anyone else is writing and I really felt that I were reading something new and interesting, that made me think and feel differently to anything else I had read when I had finished it.
