Each country, each club, is dealt with great tact.

And to celebrate the 50th anniversary since The Glory Game came out, Well Offside photographer Mark Leech delves into the Offside Sports Photography Archive to dig out the pictures taken for the book. In addition to these weighty topics, Davies also writes about the lighter side of the players' lives. He describes the camaraderie and banter that existed within the team, as well as their hobbies and interests outside of football. Sorry if this review is so far mainly about me and my time in Hampstead but it was impossible not to mention this before reviewing the book. Originally published in 1972, the book is still considered one of the best books written about football, and its popularity remains undiminished even today.

Edward Hunter Davies OBE (born 7 January 1936) is a British author, journalist and broadcaster. His books include the only authorised biography of the Beatles. Tottenham Hotspur is a football club that has always been synonymous with success and glory. The club has been home to some of the greatest players in the history of the game, including legends such as Jimmy Greaves, Glenn Hoddle, and Gareth Bale. However, it was during the late 1970s that the club really made its mark on the world of football, and it was during this time that author Hunter Davies followed the team closely for a season, chronicling their ups and downs in his book, The Glory Game. I was hoping for a bit more on his time with the Beatles and the 1960s more generally. Hunter touches on these areas but as he has written so many books, and newspaper columns, and done many other interesting things, he doesn't dwell on anything for long. The only subject that gets extensively covered is his life with Margaret.

Seldom has the beautiful game’s essence been better captured. Andy Murray The second part of the book, "The Matches," provides a game-by-game account of Tottenham's season. Davies is a talented writer, and his descriptions of the matches are both vivid and engrossing. He captures the tension, drama, and excitement of each game, providing readers with a real sense of what it was like to be there. This book was insufferable. I wanted to hurl it across the room. Shame on the publishers who let this go to the printing press. Seriously, I am amazed this got released. Davies was married to the writer Margaret Forster from 1960 [14] until her death in 2016. Their daughter Caitlin Davies is also an author. From 1963, the family lived in the north London district of Dartmouth Park. [15] [16]
