This communication with the lens means that while the lens does not autofocus, it still needs to be accurately calibrated for proper manual focus operation. Unfortunately, that’s where I often find issues with fast aperture manual focus lenses. Many lenses, including the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 are often improperly calibrated, which means that you could end up with out-of-focus pictures when trusting the camera’s manual focus assist feature. The Samyang 35mm f/1.4 that I had certainly had focus calibration problems, because I could not obtain any in-focus shots when using manual focus assist. The good news is, you can actually change and tune this behavior through the same “AF Fine Tune” feature of your camera that you use to tune lenses with autofocus capability. However, this feature is limited to +20 to -20 adjustments, which may not be enough if the lens sample is severely misaligned. I see therefore no reason to buy the Samyang 35 unless for video thanks to its low focus breathing As this is a relatively wide lens, out-of-focus areas are not as extreme as on a more telephoto optic, so having a widest setting of f/1.4 is very useful. However, the character of out-of-focus areas (bokeh) is still an important consideration for those using this lens for its wider apertures, and here the quality is very good. Resolution chart

You won't see this, but I see these differences working under microscopic conditions. I hate it when junkier lenses make me have to spend time spotting-out all the dirt with which they arrive. Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc. In the Samyang AF 35mm f/1.4 FE lens, Samyang employed an iris diaphragm with nine rounded blades, which has resulted in very nice bokeh in our view. The Voigtländer Nokton 35mm 1.4 Classic E from 2017 is very small (67 x 40mm) and only 262g albeit its f1.4 focal ratio. Prices are around 700 EUR/USD. Despite the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 feeling like a sturdy and well-built lens, it does not come equipped with weather sealing properties. It comes in versions to fit Nikon, Canon EOS and Sony/Maxxum. I'm testing the Nikon version here. You can make the usual extrapolations for other brands. And then there are lenses like the RX1 Sonnar, which, despite being famous for being wider than 35mm has at least as smooth OOF rendering at 2.0 as the Sony 35 1.8 does at 1.8. Axial CA isn’t well corrected until f/4 and in high contrast scenarios you will see quite bit of color fringing. This is usual for a fast 35mm lens and can be manually corrected to some degree. Dark and low contrast conditions are often a failure point that most lenses will inevitably encounter at some point in time. It's more damped than Nikon lenses. The focus ring take up half the barrel, which is great.
