About this deal

Incident at Phantom Hill was scripted by longtime John Ford collaborator Frank S. Nugent (The Seachers). Veteran director Earl Bellamy, best known for his adeptness with the western TV genre, directed over 1600 episodes of television including The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin ; The Lone Ranger; Tales of Wells Fargo; Lassie and Bachelor Father. Director of Photography William Margulies (Have Gun, Will Travel; The Lawless Years ) also shot 22 episodes of Robert Fuller’s series Emergency in 1972- 73. A Western that’s different enough and competent enough to be entertaining. Of course, any oater would benefit from the presence of Dan Duryea. And Robert Fuller, who appeared in many Western TV series, turns in a solid effort in a rare leading role in a Western. The second half disappointed me with the implausible tactics against the Indians, and other implausible situations. One good example is when the hero and a few stragglers are left without guns and horses in the wastelands, and are surrounded by Indians. Their solution: create a barn fire and surround the fire with the dead white bodies. Thinking they are live whites, the Indians rush to the fire and shoot the dead bodies with arrows. Meanwhile the few live whites happened to be situated where they can jump down on and overpower (silently!) the few Indians guarding the Indian horses. The whites flee on some Indian horses and stampede away the other horses! After a stagecoach carrying Government Gold is robbed the Cavalry learn from Joe Barlow (Dan Duryea), a reb convict, that the gold was hidden in land which is now in the middle of Indian treaty territory which is off limits to soldiers. It is why Captain Matt Martin (Robert Fuller) and a small group of plain clothes cavalry men along with Joe head in to the Indian country to recover the hidden gold. Along the way in Hays City they find themselves forced to take woman of ill repute, Memphis (Jocelyn Lane) with them and then they find themselves not only having to deal with the Apaches who don't appreciate them entering their territory but some outlaws who are also after the Gold. Robert Fuller stars as intrepid Captain Matt Martin in this stunning western caper teeming with action, heist movie intrigue and the edgy twists of film noir.

Not that the movie doesn’t have its head-scratching moments. When Fuller gets his assignment, he’s given a photo of Barlow that looks nothing like an old West tintype. Duryea (was he ever bad in a film?) is restrained yet very effective as a grinning viper in the nest, while Akins, Beery and Pyle leave favourable impressions. Simcox, however, is underwritten and Chiles is just poor and suffers in comparison to those around him. Lane was always going to be up against it as the sole female character, it is a token lady role and she isn't much of an actress. But she positively sizzles with sexuality and delivers what the makers were calling for in the story. A sight for sore eyes to be sure, particularly when wearing an hour glass green dress.

Incident at Phantom Hill is a 1966 American Techniscope Western film directed by Earl Bellamy and starring Robert Fuller, Jocelyn Lane, Dan Duryea and Tom Simcox. At the end of the American Civil War, a group of Southern rebels steal a Union shipment of gold and bury it in a cave near an area known as Fort Phantom Hill, Texas. After they are captured by Union forces, their leader secretly makes a deal with the army to reveal the gold's location in return for his release; a release based on a pardon promised him by the Confederate States of America at the beginning of the Civil War.

The story involves a Union gold shipment, which is stolen and buried in the desert. Both Union and rebel forces struggle to find it while threatened by the Comanche. A romance complicates the action. Eventually, after the gold is located, the rebel gets one of the group drunk, kills him and steals his gun. He kills another man, then escapes with the group's weaponry, the wagon filled with the gold, and the woman. The remaining men, without guns, must again face the Comanche. After this confrontation, only the captain and one other remain alive. They set off in pursuit of the rebel.
