The keyboard takes a second to pop up, and letters trail on the screen at a clear lag after you tap them. What’s important is that this IPS LCD is reasonably clear and colour-accurate, and that everyday tasks look crisp enough.front camera - no fancy Face ID sensors here, such as the Pixel's Soli radar, but that’s no surprise.

An almost vanilla version of Android should be the E6 Play’s saving grace, but even that isn’t enough to make up for the dire performance. The mixed use profile is based on Motorola devices on major 4G LTE networks with excellent coverage and includes both usage and standby time.

Even with EIS (Electronic Image Stabilisation) enabled – which is bizarrely switched off by default – the footage is distinctly jumpy. of RAM is barely enough to keep Android feeling functional in 2020, too, so don’t expect to be able to multitask without each app having to redraw as you swap between them. Choose from Ocean Blue and Steel Black designs, each with a metallic finish that looks as great as it feels. Pay 10% more for the Moto E6 Plus or Xiaomi Redmi 7A and you get a phone that’s twice as good in many respects.

Given the treacle-like performance, you’d think the CPU wouldn’t be all that power-hungry, but unfortunately the E6 Play can’t last all that long away from the mains. Because the main camera offers PDAF (phase detection auto focus), this high speed automatic focus technology uses pixels to enable faster and more accurate auto focus. In our test with the reference router Linksys Nighthawk AX12, the WLAN speed is on a slightly lower level than in comparable smartphones. This budget phone’s performance is simply too compromised for comfort, while its stripped-back camera makes it difficult to get usable results in everyday conditions. A large part of this performance shortfall is down to the choice of CPU – a MediaTek MT6739 quad-core chip that trails even the modest silicon provided for the Moto E6 Plus before it.

Other components lie somewhere between those of the E6 Play and G8 Plus, with a Mediatek processor combined with middling 10W charging and a generous 64GB storage, 4GB RAM and a beefy 4,000mAh battery. Low-light shots are even worse, with a real lack of clarity and sharpness as it struggles to find a focus point, and increases the shutter speed to a point that camera shake all but guarantees a blurry image.
