A classic Freudian drama, then, played out in extremis by a lost boy who, for a long time, was intent on self-obliteration.

The International Center of Photography (New York) has shown the prints, together with others not included in the book. I shot with my friends every day for three years and then left town, but I've gone back through the years. Sex, drugs and violence were captured in a raw, grainy monochrome that defined the raw confessional style adopted later by Nan Goldin, Corinne Day and Antoine D'Agata. His work has been included in group and solo exhibitions since the early 1970s, and he was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Photographers' Fellowship in 1973 and a Creative Arts Public Service photographers' grant in 1980.Their first hand intensity, recollects the work of Danny Lyon and Bruce Davidson, but Clark's raw voyeurism and insistent exposure of detail results in a somberness that differentiates his work from that of others in the early 1970s. He was more instinctively sure of himself when he was young and actually living what he was photographing, even as his doggedly self-destructive life spiralled out of control. Tulsa is a collection of black-and-white photographs by Larry Clark of the life of young people in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Born on January 19, 1943 in Tulsa, OK, Clark studied at a commercial photography school after working as an assistant to his mother, who worked as a portrait photographer of children.

Larry Clark was living with Gibson at the time, whom he introduced to Danny Seymour, a friend and neighbour of Robert Frank on the Bowery. Considered shocking for its graphic portrayal of the intimate details of its subjects' risky lives, the book launched Clark's career. His large-scale retrospective “Kiss The Past Hello” was exhibited at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 2010, and he has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Galerie Urbi et Orbi in Paris, the Taka Ishii Gallery in Tokyo, and at the International Center of Photography in New York. Hardcover, very good in near very good slightly rippled jacket with slight scuffing and light wear to edges. I remember thinking, 'I have either got to burn all the negatives and shoot myself, or go down to LA and try and get it published.

After Tulsa, he produced Teenage Lust (1983), a series of photographs depicting adolescent sexuality, Larry Clark (1992), and The Perfect Childhood (1993). Although this book predates his iconic films by at least two decades, Tulsa is quintessential Clark.

When it first appeared in 1971, Larry Clark's groundbreaking book Tulsa sparked immediate controversy across the nation. Often controversial, Clark’s black-and-white images unflinchingly capture overt sexuality, drug use, and violence, as seen in his iconic photobook Tulsa (1971) and his debut feature film Kids (1995). This series of photographs contains drug use, nudity and guns, yet still manages to present a touching sense of humanity. Tulsa demonstrated a new style of photography that was subjective, alienated and completely detached from any social agenda. With an extensive collection of more than 106,000 rare and unique volumes relating to the history of art, the Jean Outland Chrysler Library is one of the most significant art libraries in the South.

Tulsa is a key work in post-war American photography, containing graphic photographs of sex, violence, and drug use in the Oklahoma suburb, much of which Clark participated in as well as documenting.

The primarily black jacket has some wear at edges, rubbing on the rear panel, and a few closed, creased tears at edges. But Clark went there first, and Tulsa remains a template for all that followed, a blurring of the lines between voyeurism and intimate reportage, between honesty and exploitation.
