Although people often use the terms interchangeably, there is a difference between heartburn and indigestion. Indigestion can strike at any time and there are many different causes, from rich food and fizzy drinks to stress and eating on the run. Some people get indigestion a couple of times a year but others suffer every day with symptoms ranging from mild discomfort that lasts just a few minutes to severe pain, sometimes accompanied by nausea and vomiting, that goes on for several hours.

The stated dose should not be exceeded. If, after 14 days of treatment, symptoms persist or only partly disappear the patient should consult a doctor. Virtually everyone suffers from trapped wind at some point in their lives but many people are too embarrassed to admit it, mainly because the symptoms include bloating, gurgling noises and flatulence. Animal studies do not indicate direct or indirect harmful effects with respect to reproductive toxicity. Caution should be exercised in patients with mild to moderate impairment of renal function (see section 4.3 – contraindication in severe renal insufficiency). Most of this gas is absorbed into your blood stream, the rest is released as flatulence. Calcium salts reduce the absorption of fluorides and iron-containing products, and calcium salts and magnesium salts can hinder the absorption of phosphates. Affecting 25-30% of UK adults, heartburn is becoming more common, possibly as a result of increased stress, unhealthy diets and over-eating. Patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose- galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency should not take this medicine.Long term use of high doses can cause high blood levels of calcium and magnesium, especially in people with kidney conditions. Symptoms of this may include nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, constipation, diarrhoea, tiredness, muscular weakness, headache, kidney problems and impaired sense of taste. The causes of heartburn and indigestion are very similar. By avoiding the following activities it is possible to reduce your chances of suffering from the symptoms of heartburn:
