This book takes a great new look at historical romance that is inclusive, exciting but also romantic. I loved how Georgiana’s character unfolded and developed and how her aunt and uncles characters did too. I really enjoyed the romance too, it was really well written and played out well. The gentlemen in question was very respectable and a modern take on the Mr Darcy and Aaron Samuels. And at the first chapter when I read Georgina’s voracious interest about Viking funerals and the reaction she got from dear auntie and uncle she’s sent to live with, I thought that girl is my teenager self’s spirit animal! I was so sure, my love for this girl would grow at next chapters and I wasn’t wrong! Oh and I need to make it clear that handsome Captain Edwards is a captain of the navy, incase you are like me and have been seriously binging any kind of naval or set on a ship book recently! That just really added nicely to the overly hotness effect for me

Described as a 'coming of age romcom', I'd actually say this is a lot darker than the fluffy historical romance many will be expecting. Georgiana Ellers has been sent to stay with her aunt and uncle while her inattentive parents take to the coast. Friendless and without any clear direction in life, Georgiana's fortunes change when she meets the the effervescent and irresistable Frances Campbell. The ultimate party girl, Frances is filthy rich and fancy free, and she soon takes Georgiana into her inner circle of fellow aristocratic young things. But Georgiana has everything to loose within her new friend group, and reputations are about to be destroyed. Perhaps Georgiana could tell, and still keep some piece of herself intact. Even if she was labelled a harlot, a liar – even if half the county took his side – perhaps it was worth it to sow the seed of doubt; perhaps ladies would keep their distance, parents think twice about leaving their daughters in [his] company.

5. To Have and to Hoax – Martha Waters

Reputation is a book that I have been so hyped for since my attention landed firmly on romance last year, and my fall down the Tessa Dare and Julia Quinn rabbit hole into historical romances. This, combined with the Gossip Girl-meets -Mean Girls comparisons meant that I was so excited to get my hands on this one, and truly honoured to be part of the blog tour.

Frances is so sparkling, so vibrant and lively and witty and daring, that readers will be forgiven for thinking that she’s Georgiana’s love interest. Certainly, Georgiana is instantly smitten. Croucher understands the fierce, passionate crushes girls have on their friends—the yearning to be in another person’s orbit, to have them think of you as clever and charming. Romantic attachment makes the heart beat faster, but friendships burrow deeper under the skin; you feel them all the way to your bones. And that’s ordinary friendship. Frances is anything but ordinary. In addition to the giddy pleasure of her company, she exposes Georgiana to a world of fantastic wealth, endless indulgence and absolute debauchery. It’s fun, it’s dizzying, it’s literally intoxicating—and it’s very, very dangerous. Of course, we can't forget that REPUTATION is ultimately a romance, and a gloriously romantic one at that. Thomas is exactly my kind of romantic hero, and he was both a great character and a great contrast to Georgiana. I spotted several illusions or references to scenes from Austen novels and adaptations that I doubt were an accident. Initially Thomas seems to have a Mr Darcy-like countenance, but later on his relationship to Georgiana strays into an Emma/Mr Knightly dynamic which was delicious. A big part of me wished I was in a book club so I could discuss the 'reading group suggestions' at the end.

There’s also queer representation. Detective Inspector Andrew Eversham’s refusal to compromise his investigations nearly cost him his career, and he blames Katherine. When he discovers she’s the key witness in a new crime, he’s determined to prevent the beautiful widow from once again wreaking havoc on his case. Yet as Katherine proves surprisingly insightful and Andrew impresses Katherine with his lethal competency, both are forced to admit the fire between them is more flirtatious than furious. But to explore the passion between them, they’ll need to catch a killer . . .

4. Bringing Down the Duke – Evie Dunmore

As I’ve written this review, I’ve started to question whether 3.5 stars is an accurate rating, because I certainly have more complaints than compliments. However, the final six chapters are truly such a highlight that I just wish the rest of the book had been worth it. Her parents had often had fellow academics over for evenings of lively scholastic debate, and their children had been Georgiana’s constant companions […] Some of them were blessed with a little conversational wit, but it was mostly wasted on extensive, vicious debates about particular subsections of Roman history, or trying to distract each other into making unforgiveable mistakes during long, terse games of chess. On one particularly memorable occasion, a boy had crudely split an infinitive during conversation and they had all talked of nothing else for a week.” Through Frances and her friends Georgiana is introduced to a new world of wild parties, drunken debauchery, mysterious young men with strangely alluring hands, and the sparkling upper echelons of Regency society.

She passed Georgiana a small flask, which Georgiana accepted and brought to her lips without question in a sort of daze, spluttering as something much stronger than punch burned in her throat.

Like, it’s such a perfectly observed middle-aged thing to say to an impatient teenager at a party that is boring her. I loved it so much that it has entered our lexicon at chez Hall to describe any task one wishes to get out of: “I’m sorry I can’t do the washing up right now.
