Slaughter doesn't save her twists for the end, instead peppering them throughout the intricately layered story amid stomach-churning near misses and gripping character revelations.The core structure is essentially that of a procedural (it cannot really be referred to as a "police procedural", because the investigating officers are US Marshals rather than police officers).
But in practice there’s an obvious drawback; Laura Oliver’s role has been massively reduced in this sequel.Misogyny is rife in Longbill Beach adding to the many obstacles in Andrea’s way but she is wiser in this book and handles herself much better. Probably because we hear about crooked politicians every day on the news, so nothing shocks me anymore. Andrea is partnered with an older Marshall, Leonard ‘Catfish’ Bible, who delights in educating his new green partner.
