I keep reading that sugar is bad for you. Are artificial sweeteners any better? BHF dietitian Victoria Taylor says: Most adults in the UK eat too much sugar, and this is linked to health problems such as obesity and tooth decay. Artificial sweeteners are an attractive way to reduce sugar intake, and before they can be added to food in Europe the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) has to approve their use. This is a rigorous process, so you can feel confident they are safe to eat. Researchers at John Hopkins University in Maryland studied the effect of four sugar substitutes on the blood sugar of 120 healthy adults. None of the participants consumed low-calorie sweeteners six months before the trial started.

The other category of artificial sweetener is nutritive, which only includes aspartame. "The nutritive sweeteners may be lower in calories when compared to sugar and add caloric value to the foods that contain them," says Daghigh. Artificial sweeteners can usher in overeating. People with type 2 diabetes have an impaired ability to regulate their blood glucose and often have to restrict their sugar intake. If poorly managed, excess blood sugar can harm the body and lead to diabetes-related complications such as nephropathy, neuropathy and retinopathy.Acesulfame Potassium – Acesulfame potassium (also called acelsufame-K), is another type of low-calorie sweetener suitable for diabetes sufferers. The sweetener can be used in cooking because of its ability to resist heat. Sweet One and Swiss Sweet are both based around this sweetener. Low-calorie sweeteners generally have fewer calories, and as such can be good for overweight people, often type 2 diabetics, who are trying to lose weight. However, this type of study is observational, meaning it can’t prove cause, or rule out that other unknown factors could have affected the results. So, when the researchers said artificial sweeteners “should not be considered a healthy and safe alternative to sugar”, they are perhaps too strongly suggesting that artificial sweeteners are definitely responsible for an increased risk of heart and circulatory diseases. How good was the media coverage? Saccharin and sucralose are two artificial sweeteners that have been found to increase blood sugar or glucose levels.

Remember, a diabetic diet need not be 100% sugar free. Balance is the key. What is a low-calorie sweetener? Whether they are a helpful addition to our diets depends on your reasons for using them.
