About this deal

My colleague Marty Liebman reviewed the first American high-def release of Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead (2004) nearly ten years ago. Secondary hues, likewise, are more full-bodied and varied, particularly the cheerful yellows, warm marigolds, rich oranges and the hearty tan browns. It is liberal and ecstatic, fully rounding out its characters, its world and its place, while poking fun at the same. is top-notch and there is a lot to appreciate about the amount of detail that went in to the design.

When boiled down, the simple message of ‘having everything, but having nothing’ still resonates because it is told so matter-of-factly and with such enthusiasm one is just captivated. Inside the box, there is also a 156-page hardcover book featuring seventeen new essays, archive articles, an interview with Romero and tons of color photos from the production, merchandising and promotional material. Realising they might be on to a good thing, they decide to hold up for a while and plan their next move. For a more in-depth take on the film, check out our review of the 4K Ultra HD Collector's Edition from Italy. One of the things that sets Dawn of the Dead apart from other horror films is the focus on the characters. The HDR/DV is MUCH better at dealing with oranges and reds (just look at the fireball at the beginning of chapter 12. I must admit, I only just noticed it had its own commentary whilst writing this review, so didn’t get around to listening to that. The one plus of that particular workplace was the earthy humour of my young workmates, who although bemused by my devotion to non-mainstream movies would just occasionally watch a film solely on my recommendation. The pause towards the end does the climax a lot of favours too and is where we get a lot of the emotional weight and satire, seeing how cold the characters have become towards each other after being isolated with all they need for too long. From what I can gather, this cut omits much of the relationship drama and comedy elements (though surprisingly keeps the infamous pie scene) and amps up the bleak tone.

Extras: audio commentary by Claudio Simonetti; German, US and Italian trailer; interview with George A. Along with several other bonus goodies inside, the entire UHD package makes for a Highly Recommended addition to the 4K library. The 4K disc just handles the grain better (a cleaner and more nuanced look to the structure) and the fine details are superb. century fox 4k blu-ray 4k uhd 4k ultrahd action adventure animated animation anime blu-ray calibration classic comedy comics denon dirac live disney dolby atmos drama fantasy hdmi 2.Some of us missed out on Second Sight's big limited edition set, but this standalone 4K release of their gorgeous DAWN OF THE DEAD restoration is every bit as fantastic. Additionally, these two HDR presentations benefit from the improved brightness levels, showering nearly every scene with inky, raven blacks.
