About this deal

First, the vestibules. Despite being a one-man tent, there are two tent doors and two vestibules. As with other tents, you can zip the vestibules closed or you can prop them up with trekking poles for an awning-style shelter. More interior space (26 vs. 23 sq. ft.). But it feels smaller than the Skyscape. (This is due to the Skyscape’s crossbar that steepens the wall angle from the canopy to the floor.) SMD shelters have a no-see-um netting to protect against bugs. I have found the netting to be durable. However, I always carry a no-see-um patch kit on long trips. Vestibule

I get it, the strategy one is supposed to have with regard to a single-wall tent is that condensation should be headed off before it ever accumulates. This can have to do with big picture considerations like whether you’re camping in humid environments and precisely where you decide to pitch, to more micro habits, like whether you’ve taken a lot of wet gear inside. The main defense is that well-designed tents provide for substantial ventilation. The Skyscape Trekker is very stormworthy. I have used the ultralight shelter in sustained 40 mph winds with higher gusts on the Pacific Crest Trail outside of Tehachapi and heavy rains in the mountains of New Mexico. The shelter’s bathtub floor forms perfectly with every pitch (no sagging corners). Minimize the effect of the wind. As described above, the wind can be a problem for this tent. By minimizing the effect of the wind you’ll sleep better at night and you may even get away with no face slaps from the fly. You can minimize the wind effect by being rational about where you’re pitching Lunar Solo, getting the right pitch, and using guidelines. The X-Mid 1P isn't the holy grail of ultralight tents, beginning with its weight, which tips the scales slightly higher than average for tents in this ultralight tent review. The interior mesh area is much improved in this version, but the 20 square foot area is less than other tents. Still, the X-Mid 1P is a great choice to keep comfortable in a wide range of scenarios at a great price – and that's precisely what you're looking for when embarking on cross-country missions.

PROS

The interior of the Lunar Solo is quite comfortable and spacious with plenty of headroom to sit up or change your clothing inside. Like all pyramid shelters, the head and foot ends slope down, but the floor is long enough (90″) that there’s little risk of internal condensation transfer. There are also additional guy-out points halfway up the sidewalls that you can guy out with extra cordage to increase the interior space and anchor the tent down in high wind. The Lunar Solo has a bathtub floor to prevent rainwater from flooding the tent floor. The primary downside of this mid is in the configuration. The two interior trekking poles provide a stable design, but they are set up right in the middle of the tent. This relegates the prime real estate of its shelter to a strip in the middle, mostly used for gear storage. The Beta Light is best for those seeking a floorless pyramid tent with many applications across all seasons and environments. The most important tip I can share when setting up any pyramid-like shelter like the Lunar Solo, is to keep the guylines as loose as possible when staking it out, only tightening them once the main pole has been set. This gives the shelter the ability to adapt to potentially uneven or slightly sloped terrain.

The Skyscape Trekker is a very roomy solo tent. It is 8½’ long and 4’ wide. The canopy crossbar creates steeper walls and a wide ceiling that gives a more open feeling than other solo shelters. The interior height is 45”. There is plenty of room for a large person to sit up, change clothes, and organize gear without touching the interior walls. The extra long floor accommodates taller people and reduces the chance that the footbox of your sleeping bag will get condensation on it. Double Doors and Vestibules Single-walled tents are prone to condensation. However, I have not had major condensation issues with the Lunar Solo. In 2019, SMD redesigned the top vent to improve airflow and increase durability. There is a full perimeter noseeum netting between the bathtub floor and shelter walls. The Lunar Solo is designed to pull in cold air from the bottom and vent warmer air out the top. Easy to pitch For true ultralight aficionados and die-hard thru-hikers, no form of shelter burdens you less than a tarp. While we only tested two stand-alone tarps in this year's review, the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Square Flat Tarp is by far the most protective. The perfectly square design allows for endless adaptability when it comes to pitching options and locations. At only 10.9 ounces, including copious amounts of tie-out cordage, this tarp is the lightest shelter in this review. If you don't like carrying a lot of weight and you're willing to skimp on the comforts of a traditional fully covered shelter, this ultra-bomber and a durable tarp is our best recommendation. The peak height on The One is quite generous at 45″ and, despite a small interior footprint, has a relatively large vestibule at 10 square feet. The key to making Lunar Solo the sturdy shelter it can be is in the pitching. If you have no previous experience with trekking pole shelters you may have a steep learning curve. More so than other tents we recommend some practice pitching. See the review by Cairngorm Treks below for more advice on pitching. Number one, you won’t want to leave your gear outside or under a vestibule, and the Eldorado gives you plenty of storage space. Easy Tension Adjustment makes keeping the tent taut a trivial task that can be accomplished while still in your sleeping bag.
