The character is very good at drawing people out and digging in, but one wonders is it because she's a good DI or is it because she's just nosy. We have Vera realizing she needs to be better with her team. Not only because she does care about them (though she hate to admit it) but she realizes her behavior is going to drive them away. The Harbour Street investigation also has ties to her childhood and her father Hector and his birdwatching and egg stealing. Joe Ashworth, Vera's partner, and his daughter Jessie (Olivia Armstrong) board a train in "On Harbour Street," from "Vera" to begin its fourth season.

Almost as it was confirmed that production had started on series 12, eagle eyed fans spotted filming taking place at Amble at outside of Morpeth larder. Convinced the answer lies within the family, Vera begins to dig into the Kenworthy past. Much to the frustration of David’s father, it’s not long before Vera discovers the long shadow Alan Kenworthy (John Woodvine) casts over his children’s lives. Daughter Lorna (Teresa Banham) has been estranged from the family for many years and elder son Thomas (Michael Hodgson) is missing, his car keys found abandoned on the coastal path. I enjoyed this series when I first encountered it. Vera Stanhope was untypical for a detective inspector - round and large in body-shape, sharp in mind and tongue. In this book she seems to have mellowed and I didn't find that positive. The members of her team, Joe the family father and Holly the careerist, seem like caricatures. The murder mystery itself is mind-numbingly boring. Cleeves also has this annoying tic where whenever the point-of-view character asks a question, you'll have a bit of interior monologue where they explain exactly what they're thinking. It underestimates both the quality of her writing and the intelligence of the reader, and once you've noticed it, you can't ignore it (sorry for inflicting it on you now). The scene is just before Christmas on crowded train when Margaret Krukowski, an elderly elegantly dressed woman, is stabbed to death. Yet, it seems no-one saw the murderer, even though Joe and his daughter Jessie were there on the train at the time. As a fan of the North East and in defence of the lovely village of Amble, I have to say that Mardle in no way ressembles it. Thank goodness is all I can say. I mean there’s lots about Harbour Street that’s not attractive – hidden secrets, dark pasts, twisted thoughts and the fact that none of the residents here seem willing to talk.
