The girls run out to see what the fuss is about, and see a band of men and boys in the shrubs by the creek. The title On the Waterfront befits it well, for the town's only way of employment is working on the docks for the mob. This book 'fell' into my hands when I was snooping through my mother's possessions as a small child. On the Waterfront is a film that is as problematic as it is extraordinary, Director Elia Kazan’s beliefs are demonstrated within his main characters in “on the Waterfront”.

The characters in this conflict are Remedios, la curandera of the small town who listens to people’s stories and gives them advice, Marta, a 16 year old teenage girl, who was raped and became pregnant. There will be whole new colonies built for the new workers, new cities with infrastructure and public transit. It is the history of Mount Wise, as well as its waterside location, which makes it so special, and we have tried to emphasise this by giving many of the buildings a Georgian-inspired feel and by maintaining the striking Admiralty House as the figurehead of the scheme. The ordinary story line is made extraordinary by a captivating narrative but sans that, the story and the climax left the reader in me wanting more. Both children realize that since their parents can’t take care of them, they must take care of themselves and their younger siblings.Desai brilliantly portrays the issues in the village of Thul, doomed for destruction b the ad Though Desai's message is that one must adapt because the wheel of time always keeps turning, it is clear she finds these changes problematic and discombobulating. The portrayal of a poor family with an ailing mother, having many siblings who are still very young, a drunkard father is quite accurate and I can say there are families in my locality and neighbourhood similarly.

In all this the author exercises impressive description of solidarity between the rich and the poor, which touches lives in the pure realization that life is good. Kamal feels pity for the mongoose, and feels badly that it was brutally killed for a mistake, for doing what nature intended. The Thul children think it is strange that the Bombay family swims in the sea; to them, the sea is a place of work, not leisure. But, in my opinion, they too get very repetitive over the book with the author deciding to describe either very mundane things or things already described before in details. It’s also about families everywhere even in glamorous cities with everyone looking like having the best lifestyle.He tells the people that the government will send men to “pacify you with lies,” but that they will never have high-paying jobs, only low-paying servant work, like being janitors, coolies, and sweepers. The additional interest generated was due to the glowing reviews it got from those who saw this book displayed proudly on my bookshelf. The village by the sea has no memorable characters, most of them flatter than a repeatedly-driven-over roadkill, with the emotional range (as Hermione Granger would put it) of a teaspoon.

The man makes a fire and throws packets of flowers on it which make smoke; he chants in Sanskrit, and then when the fire is out he makes a paste of the ash and puts it on their mother’s tongue, claiming it will purify her and drive away the demons making her sick. There are some unanswered questions left at the end of the book that would break the full rating this book would otherwise get. Panwallah, a very kind and wealthy man helps him in all ways especially by teaching a craft that can improve the condition of his life and his family as also is the rich DeSilva, who, for no apparent reason, offer to accompany their mother in the hospital and to pay for the medicines. Angus Macdonald, Development Advisor, added: “We are not trying to build a city centre development; we will be creating a waterside village.The de Silvas depart, but another guest stays in the home—a venerable political leader studying birds that, coincidentally, Hari heard speak in Bombay. After all, he had always told himself he could get there and find work, and now he also has a moral cause to motivate him. Anita Desai has done a wonderful job in depicting the struggles that young children have to deal with when facing the adult world. But Biju turns to address another stranger who has walked up to him at the same time—the same Bombay man from the factory. During that time Lila along with the two other girls - Bela and Kamal, run chores for the family and a few more rupees is added to their daily income.

Apparently the man has already tried to talk to the District Commissioner at Alibagh, who did nothing. Hari begins to think about better ways in which he could help his family, and believes their prospects might get better when he hears that a factory will be built in their village.The book is about the challenges a family and the people of their village face as a result of development seeping in, although desirable it is irreversible. During the summer months a wealthy family (the De Silva family) comes to the bungalow- Mon Repos in Thul. The villagers feel strangely proud that their tiny village is producing such a fancy new boat even if they dislike Biju and envy him.
