It is worth thinking about, especially for mid and higher-tier groupsets which most performance road bikes generally have. With the chain fitted and the bottle well and truly shaken, you apply the lube to inside of the rollers as you rotate the crank. The process also takes longer, it's advisable to apply these lubricants the night before a ride ideally.

Usually what happens when a lube stops working is that your chain starts to squeak, rust spots appear and shifting performance drops off. I actually applied the same principle I used for cleaning my chain to my cassette - I took it to pieces and soaked it in the same re-used degreaser. Having squirted it onto a clean chain I waited a whole 520 miles before chickening out and applying some more. AbsolteBlack Graphen wax has won at least one Tour de France with Pog and lasts an incredibly long time between applications. Early muddy trails didn't cling to the chains and, as the gravel tracks dried up and became super dusty, this stuff kept that at bay too.

Wax lubes are predominantly made of wax, although they'll have a carrier solvent to help the wax to penetrate into the chain.

Even the ingredients are sustainably sourced, so Green Oil isn't simply passing the ecological impact up the supply chain. WD40 (the brand) also makes a range of bike-specific chain lubricants now that are better suited to the job, so save the WD40 (the product) for un-seizing or protecting metal parts. It's easy to apply, lasts ages and keeps things clean, but the real benefit is the protection it gives your components.
