Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai tells the story of how the shop owner in the films, Mr. Sam Wing, meets Gizmo. It’s funny, dark, and a bit scary. Brendan Hay: Yeah. But also, these are films that gave us nightmares and getting to pass that on to our kids have been cool.

The series also features notable guest stars including Zach Galligan who starred as the hero “Billy Peltzer” in the original “Gremlins” films. BD Wong: When this movie came out, all three of us, our whole community, we were starved for representation. We would kill to have better representation and more inclusivity and more diversity in the movies. Some progress has happened between the time that I was a kid and now. This project being initiated is partly in service to creating a more diverse landscape in the industry and in the entertainment field. I’m grateful for that. I think that’s intentional. I think that’s wonderfully part of the passing of the torch to the new generation. This wonderful idea that those people who enjoyed it at the time are now parents, so they want to enjoy this brand of Gremlins with their kids. And this is their opportunity to do that. I love it. People are judging, naturally, that’s just how humans are most of the time. So it’s gonna be interesting to see if it’s going to be more of a positive impact or negative impact. I think it’s going to be positive. I think the show is really good. Everything about the everything about the show, aspect wise is just like amazing. The art the storyline, the comedy, the horror parts, it’s great. I am a little bit intimidated, but it’s gonna be fun. No Gremlin has so far proved to be good-willed and nice, and most of them don't seem to even value the lives of their fellow Gremlins, sometimes beating or even killing each other for fun. Even though they are very energetic and often aggressive, their are certain people they will not hurt. For example, when Grandpa Fred was doing an inside scoop of what was happening inside the building, not a single gremlin behind him laid a finger on him. Also, in the deleted scenes when Grandpa Fred was doing his section, George, Lenny, and Daffy were present but did not try to scare or hurt him, rather joining him for fun.You record in a vacuum basically, where you read the script, you can’t picture it, you don’t know how it’s all going to come together. And now that we’ve started to watch some of the episodes it’s like, oh, okay, it’s really good. It bridges the gap brilliantly where it feels like an old classic story, to some degree, where it’s an older adventure. It feels like something that’s almost existed for a while, like Avatar: The Last Airbender where you’re just like, oh, this is just a big adventure, but in the Gremlins world.

The choice to make this series animated versus live action definitely helps when it comes to the horror elements that are weaved in. Some scenes are scary enough in animation, that live action would have pushed them too far. In the novel, the Gremlins are said to have caused many accidents in the past: the Memphis runaway escalators of 1972, the 1969 Super Bowl, the East Coast power failure of November 1965, a lesser known power failure a month later in Texas, New Mexico and Juarez, Mexico, the closing in 1963 of the New York Mirror (a newspaper that could not rid its systems of the Gremlins), the 1962 collision of a runaway train, jet plane, and a seagoing tanker at Danzig, Poland, the Bay of Pigs paramilitary fiasco of 1961, the three day episode at the Onawa, Iowa, buttonhole factory in 1957, countless casualties and incidents during WWII, and the disappearance of Vansk which was, until 1936, the largest city in Siberia. Speaking to the Comic-Con crowd, Chun and Hay explained that the series aims to “recreate ‘80s Amblin,” which they summed up as “a kid’s story with adult stakes, life or death stakes,” and explained that it will draw upon monsters from Chinese mythology in every episode. As a fun surprise, the first episode of Secrets of the Mogwai was screened; it shows us how Sam and Gizmo first meet. But first, it explains why Gizmo leaves his home (a Smurf Village-like paradise) for Shanghai: while trying to protect his fellow Mogwai from a vicious bird, he accidentally hitches a ride very, very far away, then gets scooped up by a “circus of the uncanny,” where he instantly becomes the star performer. Brendan Hay: I want to believe that, because my family has two dogs and a cat, we can raise Mogwai. I also know that my children, and I do too, I can’t blame it just on them, we spill water at an alarming rate in our homes. They’re always mopping something up. So Los Angeles is doomed.
