About this deal

The Dedica is easy to operate though, and has some nice extra features that the cheaper machines don’t have (such as adjustable temperature, and adjustable automated brew time). Some higher end machines now including some of the Sage machines, feature thermocoils, which is a bit of an improvement on the thermoblock in terms of performance and longevity, but a lot of the cheaper domestic espresso machines still use thermoblocks. I’m still considering it today but I don’t want to spend the time doing all the mods right now, maybe I’d very slowly get there… what I want is to eventually have a setup where it just takes me a couple minutes to get GREAT coffee, and not an entire brewing ceremony every day. When I press the button to pull a double shot it will start pouring the espresso but after a few seconds all three lights flash for a few seconds and it stops pouring.

I’ve been using the trick of removing the panarello and steaming with the rubber pipe and was achieving some decent milk texture, but after a couple of weeks use the pipe just seems to rapidly froth and stretch my milk in a matter of seconds with no control. So whereas some reviews just focus on the features, whether the machine has a cup warmer, the water tank size etc – I go way beyond this, to try to inform my fellow coffee botherer as to whether this is potentially the right coffee machine (or coffee grinder, or whatever product I'm reviewing) for them. Coffee it makes is fine and it’s easy to use but I’m honestly unhappy about the machine breaking down just after the two year mark. They won't be as responsive, they'll need batteries rather than being rechargeable, and they won't be as nice to use, but they're cheap and they'll do the job.

Bean to cup coffee machines are also espresso machines, but they have a grinder, and they handle most of the work for you. This does reduce the learning curve quite substantially for anyone who does want nicer milk texture without developing the skill. Before we move on, I think it's important that would-be traditional espresso machine users understand that to use a machine like this means to become a home barista, at least to some degree.
