About this deal

One of the latest applications silicone rubbers has found a foothold in is the creation of (in both large and small scale) resin molds. These resin molds allow one to create an intricate and often stunning form that can be used for decorative or practical applications. These products are often sold in what has come to be known as a silicone mold kit, these kits provide the materials and instructions necessary to create a negative form of an object which you can then use to replicate said object in the form of a resin casting.This is such an effective way of affordable replication that one might consider it over 3D printing in some instances, even though the latter is far more accurate in regard to the dimensions of the object being replicated. We have also a separate tutorial on how to make silicone molds for resin. There’s a second way to make your own silicone mold that I tried out and want to share. While the first version used a silicone putty to make an impression mold, the second using a pourable/brush-able liquid silicone to make a mold. Please think about what you plan to make a copy/mold of… What do I need to make silicone mold putty? If you are not sure whether the item you are about to mould using the Amazing Mold Putty contains one of these materials, it is highly recommended to mix up a very small batch of the putty and press it over a small area of your piece. Allow it to sit for 20 minutes and then remove. Notice the surface of both your original as well as the mould. Drag your finger across the surfaces to see if the mould surface smears. If it does, I would not recommend making the mould until you have either completely coated the original to protect the putty from the surface or simply choose type of master to test and then mould.

Once both silicone components are completely mixed, roll the silicone into a ball immediately and gently flatten. You can use a rolling pin, but make sure the rolling pin it totally clean. You should flatten the putty based on the depth of the impression you’ll need. Don’t make it too thin—the cured mold could tear. Making Silicone Molds from a Polymer Clay Object This kit is easy to use and simply requires a mixing ratio of 1:1, and what’s more, is that this product seems to pride itself on its bubble-free finish which is great if you don’t have a vacuum/pressure chamber on hand. The hardened DIY silicone molds made from this kit are not only sturdy and re-usable, but it is really easy to work with when de-molding due to the flexibility of the mold’s material, which is pretty kid-friendly if you take its non-toxic and food safe characteristics into account.If you’re feeling impatient, you can heat cure the mold by putting the mold only (not the item you are making an impression of) in the regular oven (not a toaster oven) on aluminum foil or a cookie sheet. The guidelines say to place in the center of the oven—or at least 6” from the heating elements—and make for 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. I did test out heat curing mine, and it worked just fine. Casting Resin in the DIY Silicone Putty Mold

When mixing these 2 ingredients it can get quite messy. Place some cornstarch in a bowl (something that is not too precious). Add the silicone as one mass in the middle of the cornstarch. Cutting the tip further down will allow the silicone to come out faster. (see video above)

2. Castin Craft Easy Mold Silicone Putty

I love polymer clay and I love silicone mold putty. In fact I recently explored the difference between two main brands of silicone mold putty, Easy Mold and Amazing Mold Putty. And if you work with polymer clay, sooner or later you begin to get curious about using silicone mold putty and begin to think about how it works with polymer clay. And if you can use them together. Here are two ways that you can use polymer clay with silicone mold putty. Using Silicone Molds to Create a Polymer Clay Object Since this silicone is pourable, it has longer working and curing times compared to the putty. Instead of the putty’s 3-minute working time, the liquid has a 45-minute to 1-hour working time. And a 24-hour cure time. (You can cure yours faster using heat, but I didn’t.) Remove your object from the mold. This is a crucial step in ensuring that your mold does not break or get damaged, so ensure that you are gentle, and everything should be perfectly fine. Any mold-making kit will essentially say the same thing; do not try to pull the object out of the mold, bent the mold away from the edges of the object, and allow the object to pop out on its own without any prying on your end. According to my test, if you’re going to make a silicone mold from polymer clay it will work best if the clay is fully cured first. Making a silicone mold from unbaked polymer clay did not work well with most clays and with both brands of silicone mold putty that I tested. Creating a mold from Kato Polyclay and Cernit, even when the polymer clay is baked first, did not result in a complete cure of Amazing Mold Putty. This is great if you aim to make some interesting food containers or fun jelly holders for kid’s parties. According to the Alumilite team, this silicone mold resin is also graded for use with things like plaster, concrete, chocolate, soaps, and even candle wax! The Alumilite team does recommend letting the substance cure for 24 hours if you will be using denser (heavier) substances inside the mold to avoid the product breaking or warping.

I’ve used this recipe to make a few molds for concrete. They are not effected by the alkalinity of the concrete at all. Some consideration for the type of shape you are making is important. Some shapes need to have a few seams, but that is also a concern when using the pourable mold material like Oomoo that I used for the relief mold (of My Pup). Step 1: Decide on the type of mold you’ll make The proper mix ratio is 1:1 by either weight or volume however, the Amazing Mold Putty is very forgiving and will cure even if you are off fairly significant amounts in either direction. Changing the ratio will not alter the speed in which the putty cures although it may change the physical properties and the finished mould may not be as tough or ever reach its optimum hardness.

Cure Inhibition of Silicone Mold Putty on Polymer Clay

The Alumilite Amazing Mold Putty mould will withstand 200C, and still comply to FDA standards, so baking your polymer is not an issue. This integrity can vary depending on how the heat is applied and the quality of the silicone rubber used, although the aforementioned is the general consensus among researchers. This is all due to silicone rubber being a poor heat conductor, meaning it is commonly used as a cheap and effective way to insulate things.
