Whilst it’s occasionally let down by a clunky beginner’s guide, there’s a lot to like in the new Kill Team Starter Set box. Phobos Strike Team When explaining how a rule works I like to mix in the in universe action along with the detailed rules. This new combat gauge is just a tiny part of the revolutionary redesign of Kill Team. We’ve been exploring every aspect of the Kill Team ruleset in detail over the past few weeks – learning how everything works in the new edition of the game . The rulebook in the Starter is the “compact” version, it doesn’t have all the same bells and whistles (like cards and dice), and the terrain set is essentially just the scatter terrain and not the full-on Orky encampment. This starter set is likely going to be cheaper than the Octarius box by a wide margin as well. The Starter will be a cheaper way to get into the game and will also be a cheaper way of getting all the components vs purchasing them individually. And yes, the Kommados and Death Korps are getting new boxed sets, too! pieces of the Ork Terrain from the Octarius set. This is very barebones stuff and gives you a pretty flat battlefield to play on.

There’s a lot to love in the new Kill Team Starter Set. However, there are also a few bits that could’ve been done a tiny bit better. Gunner Veteran - Gunner's come in four different flavors, and you can take one of each. The flamer for dealing with hordes, a grenade launcher with frag and krak options, and a meltagun and plasma gun for taking out high wounds targets with armor.

Operative Type: This tells you the role of the operative, which is important because your kill team might have restrictions on how many of each type you can bring on your team. As far as beginners are concerned, this book is possibly the single most important resource in this box. Sitting down and trying to riddle out how to actually play an entire game of Kill Team from the Core Rules isn’t an easy thing to do, as the rules aren’t necessarily written or formatted in such away that one might come across them whilst actually playing Kill Team. The Kill Team rules book, much like its cousins in Age of Sigmar or proper Warhammer 40,000, are meant to be used as indices of reference to which one can refer at various points through set-up and play. They aren’t designed to be a cover-to-cover read (though don’t let that stop you if you feel so inclined). Many kill teams are experts in stealth and camouflage, only striking when the time is right. Others, like the Astra Militarum, bring artillery along , because of course they do. 13. Oodles of Options

The more detailed answer though is that yes, Kill Team itself is very much an Entry Level game; it's just the Starter Set that requires a more experienced level of hobby knowledge. The fact that players are playing with a very small, select amount of miniatures keeps the overall cost very low, as well as being very appealing and a great lead-in to collecting Warhammer 40K full scale. As an example, a player playing a Space Marine Kill Team would be able to buy a few squads for individual miniatures and play with those before looking to create a full force for use in Warhammer 40K, and as the rules are clearly based on and overlap with the Warhammer 40K core rules, players shouldn't be out of their depth going into 40K afterwards. The Starter Set products for Know No Fear and First Strike for Warhammer 40K, however, are incredible as Entry Level products as detailed in our Start Collecting Warhammer 40K article. That's not to put beginners off Kill Team; as a Starter Set it is perfect, but the level of detail in the miniatures, scenery, and the amount of options of miniature construction for the two Starter Set Kill Teams will require some time, patience, and work from a beginner. A set of blank data cards for recording the information and stats of your Kill Team (with some pre-filled in examples of the Skitarrii and Cult Neophytes) On top of that, many players like to play the game in campaigns where multiple games are tied together to form a coherent story, and the game has rules for upgrading your fighters between games. The other issue with the Recruit Edition guidebook is that, at times, it’s not very well-written, nor very well-formatted.

I had no trouble with mine, and none of the print ripped or was frayed at the edges as some cheaper push-out tokens occasionally can be when removed. Each token is also a different size, shape and has a clear symbol on it so it’s obvious at a glance what’s what. Dice
