About this deal

It's by no means a bad thing - the main character needed some time to cool off and think - but I feel that it took maybe a little too long, and spent most of that time repeating the same few talking points with maybe some small variables. The legacy of expert swordsman Miyamoto Musashi lives on through Takehiko’s Vagabond and will hopefully awaken the dormant fighting spirit we all have inside of us.

The closest literary equivalent would be every time an author describes the current location of their characters, but when it comes to scenery the author doesn't have to worry about the flow and pacing of their writing nearly as much they need to when it comes to describing a sword fight, or a shootout, or a wizard duel, or a battle between two armies. I felt this one breaks the character in from the first volume stoic madman to someone more simpler, human and relatable to other characters. This is a list of chapters for the Japanese manga series Vagabond, written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue.

While fight scenes in film and animation require infinitely more exhaustive time, effort, and manpower to create they have one all-important advantage over comics and literature when it comes to action: motion. The pair enlist in the Toyotomi army, yearning for glory—but when the Toyotomi suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of the Tokugawa Clan at the Battle of Sekigahara, the friends barely make it out alive.

Miyamoto Musashi is better at learning from his mistakes; while he is not the sharpest katana in the armory, he’s partially grasped the concept of critical thinking and examining his own mindset. In this one we follow Mushashi as he descends from being a powerful and overtly confident warrior, to an almost defeated man who experiences fear for the first time in his life as that he knows as a fighter is questioned by a formidable warrior. The action scenes, though well drawn, feel tedious because the end goal is just "Mushashi feels stronger. In fact, I feel like the upcoming chapters I’m going to read will only strengthen what I’ve already mentioned above! Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro’s intertwining paths lead them toward what will be the greatest samurai duel in Japanese history. I know this is common in manga, but I think this story can be told in half the pages and be more effective. Musashi decides he must face Inshun of the great Hozoin warrior monks, even though he barely survived his last duel it seems he really has his heart set on getting killed as efficiently as possible.
