The book is primarily narrated by a 13-year-old girl who calls herself M. M can't understand why she can't be "normal" like the rest of the kids in her classes, thinks her father must have left because of her, gets frustrated with her mother's misunderstandings of her, and sees her anxiety as a ferocious creature that is constantly stalking her and threatening to overtake her. M doesn't seem to fit in with any of the kids in her class, and her pain and frustration becomes more clear during her meetings with a counselor. Part of the book is narrated by M's mother, which give the reader a bit more understanding of her struggles to understand her daughter while desperately seeking signs of her reciprocated love. Mama of ten Abbie Halberstadt helps women humbly and gracefully rise to the high calling of motherhood without settling for mediocrity or losing their minds in the process. Motherhood is a challenge. Unfortunately, our worldly culture offers moms little in the way of real help. Mamas only connect to celebrate surviving another day and to share in their misery rather than rejoice in what God has done and to build each other up in hard times. There has a be a better way, a biblical way, for mamas to grow and thrive.

There's a mish-mash of ideas and styles contained here, which showcase Neil Gaiman's talent as a wordsmith. We find the Holy Grail for sale in a charity shop. A troll that could make you question your life and its meaning. A noir take on a favourite nursery rhyme, complete with a curvy dame and hard nosed private eye. How to Talk to Girls at Parties: Unexpectedly sexual - the dirty thoughts of a pubescent boy...but other than that it was a little fun to see what was happening to the oblivious narrator. In his efforts to chat up girls, he mistakenly wanders into an alien party and has no idea that she plans to do dirty things to him. No doubt Abbie loves the Lord, her husband, and her kids. I appreciated her desire to share her goal of Biblical based mothering and wanting more from this generation of Christian “mamas.” However, I consider myself a high capacity mom of 3 boys who wears many hats similar to Abbie, but I felt like I only read all the things I was subpar at that she excels. She calls it conviction if you feel less than, I felt like it was straight up guilt/shame. And even if she said “follow me as I follow Christ” referencing Paul… I certainly felt like she gave every opportunity she could to just say - actually just follow me and my ways. A mountain is a very tall high, natural place on Earth - higher than a hill. The tallest mountain on Earth is Mt. Everest.

The Limpsfield girls certainly found their voice and it has all the urgency, immediacy and sheer vibrancy of teenage life... I hope that M's journey will help girls with autism making that same journey through their early teen years to find themselves and believe in themselves as well as help others understand and believe in them. Her 'about the author' at the end made me cry. She praised her momma and as she read (I listened to the audiobook read by the author) the Christ-like qualities of her mom I wondered if I would be spoken of like that one day when my kids are grown. Hard question to ask! Moths are beautiful flying insects that are generally more active at night. They are related to butterflies. Originally a 1 star book for me but gave it an extra star in the end bc I do believe the base message that we need Christ in all things, especially motherhood, but disagree with the authors means of conveying that message. The first short story in the collection has a private investigator trying to find out who pushed Humpty Dumpty off the wall. Apparently, it wasn’t an accident, it was murder. The cliches and one-liners fly like bullets in this opener. This story has a strong “Jasper Fforde” feel to it and is a comical start to the collection.

From a group of gourmands who fear they have eaten everything there is to be eaten on the planet, that is until they find out about the mystical Sunbird. To a story about a child who can talk to ghosts, and simply wants to provide the ghost of a woman who was drowned and burned as a witch, a headstone to mark where she is buried. This one just happens to be my favourite.

Yes I have read several of these stories in previous anthologies. But that's ok. Like a favourite movie that I'm happy to watch all over again, I'm more than happy to re-visit books & stories that I love too. Be encouraged that, as you seek the Lord, He has you right where you need to be, doing exactly the right tasks you should be doing. Reading how life is with Autism as a teenager from an inside perspective is priceless. I've always said the best way to understand Autistic people is to talk to them and let them tell how it is. M does that in this book. As always, I found my students’ interest in monsters as a good springboard for learning. That’s why I decided to come up with an easy alphabet craft that they’ll love. Her first “sin” reveal is that she scrolled too much on her phone shopping for a dress to wear to a wedding AFTER the kids went to bed. 🙄🙄

I can only imagine what 10 kids looks like, she obviously is excellent at many things. But I didn’t enjoy at all the subtle weaving throughout that if you don’t surrender the amount of kids that you will have like she did in her early years or aren’t a MOM (mom of many) as she calls it, you aren’t doing it right. Children are a blessing, but I got the impression if you stop having children by choice because of your marriage, finances, or legitimate mental health, that’s just an excuse. The second story reads like a fairy tale. A young boy is accosted by a Troll under a bridge. A troll who is going to “eat his life”. He keeps escaping the troll by promising him he will return later in his life, where he will have acquired more “life” for the troll to eat. Her conversational writing style is easy and enjoyable to read and encourages mamas without shaming them. She clearly articulates why our culture's view of motherhood fails and contrasts it with the benefits of a Biblical view. But she doesn't stop there, leaving you motivated but without knowing how to go about it. While interweaving scripturally-based direction with lively writing and humorous anecdotes, she provides practical advice for the everyday challenges of motherhood.
