The guy who wrote this describes himself as an arsehole early on, but even arseholes can be interesting when they're talking about something they have specialist knowledge of which others don't. Less of a SAS memoir and more a telling of some genuinely gripping, funny, shocking and ( I am ashamed to say) relatable stories about fighting, addiction and a life hard lived. I liked the author’s language and intelligence and some of his recollections as documented here are absolutely interesting and sometimes incredible.Philosophy, psychology, archeology, physiology and the tortured workings of the human soul all are covered here with empathy, insight, wit and crude humour. Ben Timberlake makes a neurobiological experiment in a laboratory that I'd advise everyone to stay out of--the self.

Back in Ramadi, Timberlake saw the way in which drugs are used in combat as a fuel to keep military personnel working. After dabbling with extreme sexual practices Timberlake is stuck for a challenge and finds one in the idea of getting himself hooked on heroin to see how hard it is to come off it.Then after training (which he can't tell you about cos it's secret) he goes to Iraq and attaches himself to the Americans, wreaking stoned havoc.
