If you’re looking for a light and fun dice game for your family, definitely put Kingdomino Duel on that list.

These bonuses allow you to do things like split your two dice when placing them, or add a cross to any coat-of-arms, or not follow orthodox connection rules that can make a big difference in the game. It follows the previous rules, in that the marks need to be alongside each other, and can only be adjacent to either the castle in the middle of your page, or a similar symbol from a previously marked square. In the original, it was always a matter of time before the higher value lands were played on the table.The game’s played over a series of rounds until either one player fills out their board or both players cannot place a domino.

The special abilities exist to give you a way to break the rules and to slightly mitigate the luck inherent in dice rolling. Score each domain individually and then add up the total for all of your domains, plus add in any bonus points if you have the relevant special wizard power. Because of the accessibility and colourful flair of Kingdomino I think I will still more regularly gravitate towards it.Any coat of arms that don’t have an X, allow a player to cross off a box on the spellbook sheet in the matching row. We also loved the strategy that came from deciding when to take a valuable die with a cross on it, knowing that it would score in your kingdom, and when to grab a less valuable die so that you could try and earn a spell. It does, however, keep things fair and interesting by preventing the start player from grabbing all the “best” dice. The snake draft to select dice works great for its two player count and still offers a good amount of suspense as you hope to get the dice you need. While only one of the spells give you straight up points, many of the others can be really strong in the right situations.

At the end of the turn, the player who did not roll the dice during the prior turn collects the dice and rolls them. Even though none of the spell powers are game breaking, I still found myself not wanting to let them get those bonuses.At least in the original you could see which tiles with crowns were coming out for the next turn and try to position yourself to grab one. However, our family dynamics are such now (with kids out of the nest) that 2-player games are in high demand. Finally, the wizard powers are supposed to offer a new tweak to the original’s gameplay, but I find they don’t add enough to make the game exciting. Each time you add a coat of arms without a cross to your kingdom you fill in a square in the spell book next to that symbol. Plus, dice-denial doesn’t really work here because taking something you don’t really need is too costly to bother.
