There's murder, mental instability, love (which you might could argue is mental instability in itself), and most of all, the dynamic of neighborly fellowship.Avery is such a cute character as well as chief Maria got a bit annoying and just as things started to pick up in the book to where I had to know what happens regarding Avery’s secret the book ends! This one is full of great characters, loads of possible suspects, rich family histories, and lifetimes of secrets. For he wasn't the type, Mabel knew, to open or hold or close a door for that girl, and that wasn't because he'd gone with no or too little sleep while putting towns, cities, counties, states, most likely an entire continent between where they began from and where Mabel was standing.

Her choice of subject (like her fellow Impressionist Berthe Morisot) was somewhat inescapable as, like the women she portrayed, Cassatt’s social life was limited. The autumn air was damp, still, the sky undulate with silken cirrus under which Mabel had been hanging sheets on the lines between the office and the last of the cabins. What I like about Jewell’s storytelling is that her characters and family dynamics don’t feel pat or conventional. While I can see why Ward’s story was excluded, it may have been a good one to begin the novel with to get the hook in a little sooner.

This is a well written family drama with a good dose of mystery/suspense to keep everyone on their toes.
