This method can be flexible if you need it to be. It will require some planning around your typical daily schedules though! You’ll want to try and mold your baby’s schedule around the day’s events without skipping vital parts of their established routine, namely their feed and nap times. I’m not sure if they were better sleepers overall or if I just wasn’t as concerned and fussed about it. If not, I would keep things as simple as possible with all of your kids. If you have a toddler to put to bed first, wear the baby in a baby wrap so they’re safe and happy while you get your little one to bed. With my first child, I could tell you exactly when sleep regressions took place, but I can’t do that with my other kids. The fact that this book is written by pediatric nurse moms is very reassuring, especially being a former registered nurse myself. First, if your baby isn’t feeding well then hold off on starting. Your baby can’t afford to stretch feedings when they’re still on the learning curve. Likewise, if they’re not gaining enough weight, it’s not the right time to start. So long as your baby falls asleep without the associations, you can follow their program. I was in information overload. There were so many options, all with their own advantages, but it was too overwhelming. That choice led to some major regret. With all the baby sleep training resources available, it’s hard to know which is the best fit for you. Prime example: As a new mom I read everything I could get my hands on before my firstborn arrived and guess which method I chose. None.

Why are Soothing Rounds so Important? 

Using a sound machine can be a good sleepy indicator and help to set up a healthy sleep environment. However, it’s not the only thing you can do to try and help your baby sleep well. Aren’t Baby Sleep Schedules a Bad Thing and Overly Rigid? You could have your baby start the day at 8 AM and just adjust all the other scheduled times accordingly. You could also start at 6 AM. I haven’t personally looked into it as it isn’t in the first book, but I’ve heard from other mamas that there is a Moms on Call schedule that is specific for both your toddler and infant. Moms On Call was a saving grace for me. It gave me a flexible guide that truly helped my babies to achieve longer stretches at night. Nap time became established, but as the naps evolved and changed over the months, the Moms On Call schedules helped give me the guidance to adjust to all that. Understanding appropriate awake time and not keeping your baby up for long stretches is often completely new information to many new moms.
