About this deal

For DIYers, this is an ideal place to start if you want to look the part. Professional tradespeople might expect more features and higher build quality from a combi drill though. There are a few too many plastic parts, a rattle that got on my nerves, and no place to store batteries any bigger than little 1.5 Ah ones.

DeWalt have included a belt hanging hook with the DCD796. This is something that I look for in every drill that is simple, but incredibly useful. It comes fully installed, but if you want to switch it to the other side you only need to remove a little Phillips head screw. Overall, we love the Dewalt DCD796N and think it offers great value for money. However, if we had to be critical there are some small things that may be worth mentioning… Lightweight and compact: Weighing just 1.6kg, this drill is easy to handle and manoeuvre, making it the perfect tool for working in tight spaces. Surprisingly, there are only 13 torque settings on the DCD796. I would expect to have a little more control over the clutch with a premium cordless drill like this, but it’s not a deal-breaker. Unless you’re planning on doing a lot of precision driving into a variety of materials, it’s not a big deal. There are 15 positions if you count drill and hammer mode though. The speed selector can be a little tight to control, slowing down the work that you are completing, but this does stop accidental switches between the two!Ergonomic handle: The drill comes with an ergonomic handle that provides a comfortable grip, reducing user fatigue during prolonged use. LED work light: The built-in LED work light illuminates your work surface, providing improved visibility and accuracy. The Dewalt DCD796N comes with a 3-year warranty for the body of the tool. With certain companies this warranty can be extended providing the product is registered online so this is worth watching out for! It’s worth mentioning the multifunctional work light you get with this cordless drill. It’s a much more powerful LED compared with the one on the DCD776 and comes with three settings controlled by a dedicated switch. Set to shine for 20 seconds once you’ve released the trigger, you can choose from three levels of brightness. What sets this cordless drill apart from the competition though is the third setting. On “spotlight” mode, the strong LED light stays on for 20 minutes. It’s the little features like this that make DeWalt one of the best brands around. It’s not just a drill, it’s a work light! Performance-wise, it’s exactly what you’d expect from a DeWalt combi drill with these specs. It did the job comfortably, but it wasn’t going to win any speed records. The brushed motor is a bit on the large size and it’s a tiny bit front-heavy, but the DeWalt DCD776 is a dependable drill that should last for a long time.

It is also worth looking for newer models that have a 5.0 XR lithium-ion battery, as this is longer lasting and will increase the power that is offered with the tools. Older models come with the standard smaller battery – which will be sufficient if completing small to average-sized jobs around the home, but for anything more, you are going to want the larger battery size!

Brushless motor: The DCD796N comes with a brushless motor that delivers up to 30% more runtime than its predecessor, ensuring you get more work done in less time. What irritates me though is where the battery meets the drill. One of the first things to get on my nerves with any battery-powered tool is if the battery rattles about in its holder. There’s far too much play in the battery and I worry if the connection is going to hold up over time. It doesn’t help to make this combi drill feel like a quality power tool. Overall, this neat machine comfortably does everything you need from a hammer drill. Thanks to its compact form factor, it is very suitable for travel and easy home storage in the toolbox, but it also is not functionally limited due to its size at all. The drill features a 2-speed motor and 15 torque speeds, ideal for power screw driving. There were no big surprises when it came to putting a hole in 3 mm of steel plate. The DCD796 made it through in no less than 45 seconds! An incredible performance compared with some of the more budget cordless drills that I’ve tested. It was comfortable, not too noisy, and simply ate through the steel. The main things that we liked about the Dewalt DCD796N are how lightweight and compact the drill is, especially considering the power that is offered with the drill. It is big enough, and built from strong enough materials, to feel that it will be able to cope with the jobs that you are asking of it, but also lightweight enough to reduce fatigue when working and help you to access those hard to reach places (helped by the fact that it is cordless of course!). Measuring just 195 mm in length, this little cordless drill will fit into tight spaces that other drills just can’t match. Weighing 1.3 kg without the battery, it’s not the lightest cordless drill on my list but it’s certainly one of the most capable. Compatible with DeWalt 18V XR batteries: The DCD796N is compatible with all DeWalt 18V XR batteries, ensuring you can work for longer without the need for frequent battery replacements. All the best combi drills on the market, as far as I’m concerned, run on 18 Volt batteries. So, it’s good that DeWalt have been working on their XR range of tools for years and years. Supplied with a single 1.5 Ah battery, the DCD776 combi drill kit is ideal for DIYers that aren’t going to push this drill to the limit for hours on end.

Two-speed transmission: The drill comes with a two-speed transmission that allows you to adjust the speed to suit your needs, ensuring precision and accuracy in your work. The solid reliability of this DeWalt combi drill was evident when it came to driving screws. 70 mm long wood screws went in and out without camming or much pressure needed. The 150 mm screw could have kept going through the timber there was that much torque left over! I wasn’t forced to use the drill mode for driving screws, which was a good sign.
