In August 2020 it was announced that Adam Woodyatt would be taking an extended break from the show. Ian temporarily departed from the series in January 2021. In September 2007, Ian notices that Lucy is behaving weirdly and finds out that she is convinced that her late mother Cindy - also Ian's late wife - is alive. Soon he finds out that Steven has returned and has been stalking him, up to the point when Steven ends up holding Ian hostage for several weeks. Steven then brandishes a gun and threatens to kill Ian, before summoning Lucy and Jane over to the place where Ian is being held hostage. Thereupon a struggle ensues over the gun and Steven accidentally shoots Jane in the end, which results in her needing a hysterectomy. Ian forgives Steven for his actions, but a year later discovers that Steven has been gas lighting Lucy to the point of attempting to turn her again Ian. Soon the last straw comes when Ian finds out that Steven had attempted to smoother his grandmother, Pat Evans, to death with a pillow after she had been hospitalised; Ian confronts Steven for what he has done and disowns him, which prompts Steven to leave the square once again.
