About this deal

On Thursday, December 12 1985, the NAVS erected a statue of a little brown dog in Battersea Park, London, to commemorate the suffering of millions of laboratory animals worldwide, but also, to ensure that the suffering of one dog is never forgotten. Based on Chris’s farm they combine a passion for their surrounding area with in-depth knowledge (read intense geekery) of distilling and cask maturation. This is a book that kept me engaged through its twists and turns to the tantalising last page, taking me through familiar streets, squares and buildings of London but placing me into the heart of unfamiliar but historic events.

Whether that’s selecting the most interesting single casks, or bringing a level of detail and transparency to rectified distilled spirits that is quite uncommon.Punch-ups and demonstrations between the two warring factions - the young ‘gentlemen’ from University College and the working class youth of Battersea - were a regular occurrence. It was not long before Schartau and Hageby gave up the idea of working for a degree for, as they put it, "physiology is at present inseparable from experiments on animals". People and shapes made from solid wood and spun cotton - perfect for crafting, painting and decorating! They observed that there was an incision in the neck in which two tubes had been placed and that there was no smell of anaesthetic.

With a complex profile, this is a contemporary high strength Scottish dry gin with piney juniper, citrus and floral notes.Developed in collaboration with Bailies of Bennachie, a voluntary conservation society that was established in 1973 to manage and look after one of Aberdeenshire’s most well known and well loved landmarks, Bennachie.

We're not sure we've ever seen parsnip in a gin before, though it adds some earthy, sweet and spicy notes, so we're certainly here for it. Stephen Coleridge, who took up the appointment of Honorary Secretary in 1897 (remaining until 1936) came from a family of committed anti-vivisectionists; his father had been one of NAVS’ vice-presidents and Stephen had not been converted to, but born into the cause. Little Brown Dog Spirits is an independent bottler and micro-distillery based in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Coleridge refused to apologise, insisting that Professor Starling, under the 1876 Act, should have killed the dog as soon as the object of the experiment had been attained, that is after he had performed his second vivisection. The press itself was divided on the verdict - ‘The Times’ upheld the decision of the court; ‘The Daily News’, along with other newspapers and journals, described it as a miscarriage of justice. The result is a combination of the classic gin profile of juniper, spice and citrus mixed with hints of herbaceous, earthy notes, representative of the local landscape. We'll take you through the year-long process, from tapping birch trees in the spring, to collecting bee pollen in the summer, harvesting parsnips in the autumn and planting juniper in the winter. Then, as now, a prosecution can only be brought if it is within six months of the alleged offence and has the approval of the Home Secretary. Not only does the novel has all the elements of a great story with loads twists and turns, it's based on a true but unknown story.

However, with the election of a new Council of a different political hue, the situation changed and, on 9 March 1910, the Council approved the decision to remove the monument. This method allows the flavours from some of the more delicate botanicals to come through in the distillation process along with the classic gin flavours from the macerated botanicals. The gin flavour profile provides notes of fresh summer berries and some green herbaceous undertones, balanced with a fresh and drying finish.
