About this deal

After the hottest summer for many years in the UK we are now at that time of year where the lawn mower gets put away and out comes the lawn rake. The cordless scarifier folded away in seconds perfectly fitting into my wheelie bin storage box that has been repurposed as they are much cheaper than small sheds!

For sensible money you can buy this 2-in-1 scarifier and aerator from VonHaus. It really only has two competitors in my mind other than the Makita UV3600 Lawn Scarifier which isn’t even fair to review in the same category – let’s just call the Makita a Tiller :D. Firstly the better but way more expensive Bosch AVR 1100 Verti Cutter Lawn Raker and the BMC that looks to be built on the same tech with the same depth of lawn rake (15mm to -7mm). As a lawn aerator I Fancied the Einhell, but as a scarifier of lighter material, on money, this wins hands down at just over half the price! I think for thatch this is a real winner: The machine is also so easy to use, it’s lightweight at just under 10 kg making it simple to manage. Raking Diameter The raking diameter of this lawn rake may seem a little on the small side with only a 32cm capability, that is 2cm smaller than its rival the Flymo. Now, compared to it’s other counterparts with widths of up to 43cm, this might be a potential disadvantage; however, it could also be beneficial if it’s to be used in a smaller areas and lawns with more narrow strips.Overall this is an excellent electric lawn rake, due to it’s light weight, portability, good build quality and array of features. Let’s start with assembly – something that I never really enjoy doing. This Hyundai needed a little more work than the other models I tested. Assembly took about 30 minutes in total. This isn’t a huge amount of time, but keep in mind that I have a fair bit of experience assembling scarifiers. For someone who has never done this before, it’ll likely take much longer, especially considering that the instruction manual was very little help. If your lawn is much over 300m 2 and needs scarifying then the only way of making the work less arduous is to use a petrol scarifier. If you’re caring for a fine or ornamental lawn only a good quality sharp petrol scarifier will be able to cut through the thatch cleanly without excessive damage. Changing depths is easy if you feel like you’re taking too much material. Just like the cordless lawn mower range you simply disengage the handle and lift or drop to the next setting:

As you’d expect from Bosch, this is a pretty sturdy scarifier – it comes with a 2-year warranty for peace of mind when buying. However, the grass collection box is a little flimsy. While you can clear a lot of moss with a rake, cordless scarifiers are going to do a much better job, especially if you have a lot of thatch as well. An electric model of scarifier may make the job much more easy as well. You might be wondering at the end of this whether or not you really need a lawn scarifier. Could the job be done with a manual scarifier or a rake instead?

If you’re just looking to remove moss and thatch buildup from your grass, then a lawn rake will do the job. However, if you really want your lawn to look great, and think that aeration could help with your soil, then it’s worth going for a scarifier instead. This is another mid-budget electric scarifier and aerator that offers a lot of value, given what it costs. The aerating roller works just as well. You may find that you don’t actually need to use it once you’ve scarified, but, if you do, you’ll be happy with the results.I really struggled to find any major downsides to this rake, it even comes with a 2 year warranty if you register the rake with Bosch. The waste is automatically compressed to save space, so the 34 litre capacity collection box can hold a fair amount. There is a handy window so that you can see how full the collection box is getting without the need to remove it. When it comes to choosing whether you go for an electric, cordless or petrol scarifier, consider the pros and cons associated with each type: But what bugged me was the collector. Perhaps I was having a dozy day but the frame (which way round it should go) took me a good few minutes to decipher. The user manual might want to work on that.
