About this deal

If you prefer those over the extra-long extended editions, you might want to hold on to your previous set. Would I have preferred a single BD of extra features, rather than just brand new replicates of my previous SD-DVD extras discs? Also in this section is a still gallery for Abandoned Concepts, featuring the talked about Slime Balrog.

This is the next best thing to having been there when this film was made – and an extraordinary opportunity to see firsthand the talent and passion that brought Middle-earth to the screen. Watching them again, the films still feel perfect, and though there may be some bad jokes, and perfectionists may wish that more of the books made it on screen (or were added to the extended cuts), the sheer scale that Jackson gets to by the final chapter is one of the great achievements of cinema. However, assuming that this isn’t a Gladiator-size mistake on the part of Jackson and the studios, it’s only fair to conclude that this is a step up from the previous presentation, and deserves a just-about demo-quality rating all-round. The worst offender was the transfer for Fellowship, which was plagued with softness, DNR, edge enhancement, variable grain and black crush.A trilogy of classic, frankly must-see movies that transport you to another world, rich with all of the lush landscapes and epic effects that we have, more recently, seen in the likes of Avatar, but also boasting well-developed characters, decent dialogue and a multi-layered storyline to hold it all together. The Costa Botes documentaries accompany acclaimed special features by Michael Pellerin from the original extended cut releases to make this the most comprehensive The Lord of the Rings compilation ever. Colour timing aside, I found the new transfer for The Fellowship of the Ring – remastered from a new 2K master – far more pleasing than the last HD edition. The tremendous design work that went into the costumes, weapons and set dressing finally gets a proper showcase for the home audience; the detail and definition on these discs is superb. The result is a colorful, sublime presentation not seen since these films were in theaters, maybe not even then.

It's allusions are veiled properly, mixed in with a coming-of-age and responsibility tale, so that viewers young and old can relate to the subjec Detail is vastly improved – in fact it’s often strikingly excellent – and the film’s grain structure has, this time, been kept intact, yet with no signs of the rampant DNR that had been previously applied to the Theatrical BD release.which offers a location-by-location series of scouting trips of the places filmed in New Zealand as substitutes for middle Earth.

As with the extended DVD editions, the films have been split over two discs, so no information has been lost in compression.Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) didn't think himself much a hero, or much of anything for that matter, as his life consists solely in the safety of his home, the Shire, along with the other furry footed Hobbits. Disc Three offers “The Appendices, Part V — The War of the Ring” which starts with an introduction by Peter Jackson (2 min. Saruman the White looks like he's standing under one of Bruckheimer's CSI filters, his skin looking a tiny bit jaundiced. Mortenson deserves all the praise lavished upon him (and funnily enough, he does get the most praise, more so than Wood), as he provides a career re-defining performance as the mysterious, courageous ranger. Here they were Michael Horton and Jabez Olssen, and Jackson talks about the process where in which he gets to see a rough cut put together first, with often crude animation filling in for the uncompleted sequences.
