About this deal

As 2023 comes to an end, Three Points of the Compass takes a glance at a handful of items of gear that accompanied me on trail.

These are not only sprung, speeding up longer cuts, but also precision-tight, cutting threads, paper, etc with aplomb. I have a Nylon scaled Climber - two mm shorter, with a number of additional features I rarely need (Nylon scales are far less fragile than 'Celidor' even if you can't fit a toothpick and tweezers, or a 'Plus' option that adds a pin and pen). I use this probably every day - mainly the scissors which are great on all SAKs - but all the other tools come in use quite regularly. Three Points of the Compass sets out on a winter wander from London to Birmingham along the Grand Union Canal. This bold, bright electric yellow-colored Pioneer X has Alox handles, which are punched from aluminum, embossed, anodized and coated with a protective layer to keep them safe from the effects of use and corrosion.

Its not a major concern because of the out standing warranty from Victorinox, but it is i hope not the start of yet another famous brand going down hill ? An example could be using the collected information to analyze and determine what information is most popular on the site, to be aware of what should be easy to find on the site.

The scissors have a small leaf spring between the handles which gives a decent ‘springiness’ to open them, these springs can break or infrequently come adrift. We never grey import from China, Europe, USA or anywhere else so you can rest easy knowing that your Swiss Army Knife is guaranteed to be the genuine article.However, as an EDC item with all the, (sufficiently durable), tools to fulfil my typical daily needs, (and without going down the road of carrying an “all-out” multi-tool), the Pioneer-X will be really hard to beat. The saw on the three-layer Victorinox Farmer and its big brother, the four-layer Farmer X, saws on both push and the pull strokes. The Victorinox Swiss Army Pioneer X Alox is an excellent little camping knife – or indeed small handy folding knife for most occasions. While the three-layer Farmer has a long history, dating back to the 1950s, the Pioneer X first appeared on the market in 2016 and was welcomed by fans who missed the capability of a larger pair of scissors.

One of these Alox knives would be slipped into a little internal pocket in a Patagonia day pack that I carried for city use for a decade or so. Overall, the Pioneer X is a very capable and well-thought out tool that is very handy and excellent. In 2015 Victorinox announced that, for the first time ever, they would be bringing out an alox 93mm Swiss Army Knife with scissors. This makes the lines of the knife cleaner, but does mean you miss out on a corkscrew attachment, which is arguably a bit of a blow. I haven’t yet reviewed the Ranger Mike, there is a comparison blog on this knife and the Camper in the pipeline.

Some mention that the can opener is brilliant and easy to use, while others say that it's harder to open and the scissors don't open as much as they'd like. This tool is slightly larger, thicker and tougher than the equivalent tool found on ‘medium sized’ Cellidor Victorinox knives and resists twisting under torque. I have previously looked at single-layer and two-layer options from the terrific 93mm Pioneer range. Whether that’s good or bad depends on how often you need tweezers and toothpicks, and how annoyed you were when you lost them.

In fact, as multitools go, Victorinox is one of two market leading brands (our Swiss Army Knife vs Leatherman multitool comparison breaks down the main differences between the two). At under 3 inches long, it is legal to carry in the UK, but only if you have a good reason to do so – something worth considering carefully before wandering around with a knife. It had absolutely everything I could ever want or need in a pocket knife… well almost… there had to be something that’s a better fit. There are no such worries here, the tin opener opens tins surprisingly well, albeit slowly, the two screwdrivers will drive any screw that they fit, and the spike makes holes and enlarges them perfectly.

Well a few years ago Victorinox finally did give us the pioneer X same old familiar pioneer with those long long long awaited scissors that are so good from the king of the pocket knife ! If choosing an alcohol brew kit for day walks, Three Points of the Compass is usually carrying a Toaks burner.
