From the beginning, on to each time the god of life brings her back at different intervals, 8 years later, 12 years later, 16 years later, etc etc, she finds herself crossing paths with Darius. I still read many because it's part of my job to stay informed about comic series, but it was mostly Batman titles, X-books, the Valiant Universe, and other series that I read more out of habit than love.

Godess of death is fired from God's office and she is sent to earth for living a mortal life in the body of a girl named Laila Starr.It was also about Darius Shah and the many other people who touched her and his life, and how it all intertwined to create a story that flowed freely. Darius tells Laila of recent events, most of them tinged with loss and guilt, and, predictably, Laila/Death starts to respect the sanctity of human life. The colors are essential for this, as they give each page a flash of surrealist vibrancy that translates the world through the lens of a romanticized memory. But Laila Starr adds an additional layer of interest more in tune with death as it is now, by exploring the bureaucracy of death.

Struggling with her newfound mortality, Laila has found a way to be placed in the time and place where the creator of immortality will be born. In this story, the Goddess of Death loses her job because the person who has been prophesied to invent human immortality has been born.Throughout these meetings, she starts to see what death does to people, family and loved ones, which begins to change her outlook on the topic. In its first two issues, meticulous care is put into showing how life illuminates itself against the larger backdrop of death.

It invents a story that playfully remixes the tropes of a many-thousand-year-old religion with the modern culture of India’s cities and beyond. I now have a poet to look up and read, and the end of a story that was so brilliantly unhinged that I am not upset we did not get a fairytale ending. I mean the fact that it seems there was no real invention of immortality, it just seems they both, Darius and Laila, found out the real meaning was it is to be alive, and what it means to live. I wasn’t taken with Filipe Andrade’s goopy, funhouse-mirror-style art though I liked the colourfulness of the comic overall.

The story is based on Hindu lore, focusing on the interplay between the mortal and the divine; Death (implied visually to be Kali, the Hindu goddess of death, time and change) mingles with spirits, humans and Brahman alike. While Ram V was influenced by India’s bureaucratic approach to death, especially in Mumbai (a city he keeps coming back to in his work), and the governmental abandonment of India during the pandemic is particularly striking, many people the world over have now forcibly encountered a bureaucratic approach to mass death. Reimagining mythology for the modern age isn’t a novel idea: my peers and I are part of the generation that was raised on “Percy Jackson,” after all.
