About this deal

Korg may on occasions supply software programs, data files and/or documentation belonging to a third party or parties (hereinafter collectively referred to as “Third Party Software”).

In the event that Korg offers an updated or upgraded version of the Licensed Program to you at any time, Korg’s obligation (and that of its distributors and dealers) to support previous versions of the Licensed Program shall cease 28 days following such updated or upgraded version being made available to you. Korg reserves the right to make modifications to the Licensed Program and to the support services set out in clause 7 of this agreement (referred to in this agreement as “the Services”) without prior notification to you. The fact that the drum sequencer outputs eight separate CV outs is not only good for percussion but for all manner of other uses. In reality, you are looking at eight rhythmic triggers, so you could use these to launch all manner of events in your modular system, from strumming Mutable Instruments Rings to triggering a sample & hold, or countless other CV-based possibilities.The joy of this sequencer is that as well as the basics like setting pitches, bridging notes and sliding notes, you have more advanced options to really make your music the way you want. Nothing in this agreement shall affect the statutory rights of any person dealing with Korg as a consumer. It doesn’t even stop there as there are plenty of other features that I haven’t had the space to go into, such as the polyrhythms, ability to play your sequences in quarter notes, triplets and more. Suffice it to say this is a solidly built, comprehensive sequencer that is both musical and very intuitive. The 2 x 8 step buttons can be used in the usual way to turn notes on/off, but you can also use the MODE button to switch their function, opening up powerful possibilities such as letting you “perform” the sequence itself, as on a Volca unit. A very decent upgrade with genuinely pro features, that cements its position in the top handful of mini keyboard controllers available.

With its three rows of 12 unquantised steps it wasn’t the finest example of the genre, but it scored by matching the MS10/20/50 in style — and by being more affordable than the ARP 1621.

The MS20M is a thing of rare beauty and even to someone like myself, barely capable of assembling a sandwich, there’s no denying the DIY angle brings you closer to your new instrument. Whether this model represents the ultimate MS20 probably boils down to the importance you assign to having an attached keyboard, to the idea of playing a complete instrument. With both popular CV and gate standards provided, plus MIDI on any channel, at least it shouldn’t be difficult to find a suitable controller. In the event that there is any physical defect in the disk (storage device, etc.) on which the Licensed Program is supplied, Korg will exchange the defective disk with a non-defective disk of the same model at no charge, provided that you have notified Korg of the existence of such defect within 28 days from the date you have received the disk, and provided that Korg shall never be held liable to replace the disk or data in the event that the defect is attributed to accident, abuse, misuse or other such causes outside of Korg’s control. Admittedly it’d take up rather a lot of value hp but it could be worth it, as the hub of a system. That said, it’s small and portable, so gigging with it may never be a concern. It’s been mentioned before that the earlier filter is a tad noisy — and so it is — but this barely detracts from its value. In contrast, the Rev 2 filter is more refined and controlled, its resonance exhibiting a shimmering, ringing quality that is a pleasant alternative to the bitter and often distorted harmonic mess of the older version. In the end, both are excellent, and there’s no doubt you’re spoilt by having the choice. This just goes to show the development care and thought that was put into the SQ-64. Of course, there are things that I’d change but they are minor and many people won’t even notice, or be bothered by them. All in all, Korg has created such a solid little sequencer that it’d be churlish not to recommend takes a place high on your shortlist.
