When Henry Avray Tipping, the influential Country Life Architectural Editor of the early 20 th century, created a new country house for himself at the end of the Edwardian era, he was determined that the surrounding gardens should not be a mere setting, but an equally important part of the project. Indeed, a significant section of the gardens pre-dated the idea of the house. Once Tipping had chosen the Chepstow area for his weekend escape from London, he initially restored Mathern Palace and lived there with his mother from 1897 until her death in 1911. In 1910, Mounton House was renovated by Henry Avray Tipping, architectural editor of Country Life magazine and a leading authority on the history and furnishings of grand country houses. The entrance courtyard wings project forward with gable ends flanking the approach drive. Single storey, stone with concrete tiled roofs. The openings have mostly been altered, with five large 4-light mullioned windows and a door on the right hand range, the left hand range is blind to the courtyard, both have a 3-light window in the gable end. The courtyard is closed by a stone wall with square gate-piers framing the drive. These gables and walls form an enclosure to the house approach which was apparently inspired by an arrangement of barns at Markenfield in Yorkshire. Interior Although the description may indicate a stile, ongoing improvements to the Public Rights of Way System may mean that these have been replaced by gates or kissing gates. The world of English country-house living changed irrevocably, so Tipping never saw his hopes for the house come to fruition.Words can hardly express how I felt when I first saw High Glanau in 2002. A perfect Arts & Crafts house, set on a steep hillside above Monmouth with its spectacular views over the Vale of Usk towards the Brecon Beacons. I had vaguely heard of Henry Avray Tipping (1855-1933) who built the house in 1923, as for over 50 years I had been an avid reader of Country Life magazine. Only later did I discover that Tipping had lived in Monmouthshire, in three different houses, for nearly 40 years and that he was the Architectural Editor of Country Life magazine from 1907 until his death in 1933. His weekly article, and large oeuvre of books on country houses and their gardens influenced a whole generation in the early 20th century. Mounton is a hamlet in Monmouthshire, south east Wales, United Kingdom, located two miles west of Chepstow in a rural setting.

The more I worked in the garden, the more intrigued I became with the man who created such a paradise. I found he had written many important books - nine huge volumes on country houses, books on furniture and wood carving, a book on garden history and a practical garden book, as well as the garden column for the Observer and Morning Post. I slowly bought those books on the internet and in old book shops, and began to research the story of his life. By now I was so interested in Tipping that I went to Bristol University to take a Masters degree in Garden History, writing my dissertation on the life and work of Henry Avray Tipping. Mounton House was his most ambitious project and he rebuilt it in the contemporary Arts and Crafts style for which he is best known. He added formal water and wilderness gardens and employed 12 full time gardeners to maintain them. Keeping in the same general direction, continue diagonally left across the next field looking out for a narrow path on your right going steeply down to the field boundary. After about 150 metres, cross a stile in the hedge on your right and walk across a small field to a footbridge over Mounton Brook.
