He is often seen as an anti-hero/antagonist in the book series, but is a true hero in the movies. Rowley usually gets blamed for Greg's mischievous pranks. Despite his idiotic behavior, Rowley always wishes the best for everyone, and is a very nice, thoughtful and innocent kid. His journal in Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid is most likely a different one from the second book. In the online book, Rowley is said to own a PlayStation with 42 games. However, in the movie, Rowley is shown to have a Wii, meaning that he probably upgraded his console. However, Rowley may have gotten rid of it, especially in Dog Days and The Ugly Truth when he and Greg were ex-best friends, and the only reason he gotten that diary was to be like him. Given estimates made based off of illustrations of him, Rowley Jefferson is most likely between 4' 11" (149.86 cm) and 5' 1" (154.94 cm) tall. However, this is only conjecture, as his height has never been stated definitively within the series.

He is the main character of his own spin-off called Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid, which also had two sequels called Rowley Jefferson's Awesome Friendly Adventure and Rowley Jefferson's Awesome Spooky Stories.

Rowley then brings up an anecdote in which he and Greg draw their own superheroes. In the penultimate diary entry, Rowley has a sleepover at Greg's house, where they sneak out to bounce on a trampoline. Greg's parents get mad, his mother divides his and Rowley's room in half. Greg draws an "invisible forcefield" that "zap"s Rowley if he tries to pass through it. Greg prevents Rowley from using the bathroom, and he pees out the window in the morning. The sleepover ends with Greg flushing one of Rowley's action figures down the toilet. Rowley's immaturity and naivety occasionally leave him susceptible to Greg's manipulation, but his charming and innocent nature makes him popular, particularly among his fellow students, especially the girls. Their friendship, while sometimes challenging, holds genuine affection. In the movie adaptations, their bond is even more developed compared to the books, though they remain true friends in both versions. It is never revealed what country Rowley went to on his trip to South America in the book series, but the online book states that he went to Brazil. In the book series, he has 7 strands of hair that is flat on his head and is wider than Greg's. He has two large teeth and his mouth never appears to be closed, except for a few occasions. A shorter Wimpy Kid story from Rowley's point of view was written to celebrate World Book Day 2019. Kinney later developed it into a full-length book, becoming Rowley Jefferson's Journal, because he enjoyed writing it. [9]
