The best tequilas are made with 100% agave, but the legal minimum is just 51%, with the rest allowed to be made up by a neutral spirit.We recruited a panel of 10 testers, made up of WSET-trained experts and tequila fans, to give their thoughts on 40 blanco, reposado and añejo tequilas. Each was tried neat and then followed by some water to dilute and soften the alcohol, bringing out the more nuanced flavours. Born in the highlands of the Jalisco mountains, Cazcabel is crafted by the Vazquez family, who possess four generations of expertise in agave farming and tequila production. The tequila is made using seven-year-old, 100% Blue Weber agave, with each bottle emblazoned with a depiction of the Jalisco mountains. With the upcoming completion of Cazcabel’s brand home and distillery in Atotonilco El Alto, the expanded production capacity makes it the ‘ideal moment’ for the brand to enter the US market. Like champagne, tequila production is a closely guarded secret and must be made and bottled within a specific area in Mexico. It can only be made from blue agave (unlike smoky mezcal which can be created from over 30 different varieties). Looking across multiple categories, from premium to ultra premium, blanco to mixto, with entrants from producers of all scales, the competition saw a number of Tequila and mezcal brands awarded medals for their superior quality.

Our panel – made up of 10-accredited spirits experts and tequila-loving consumers – put 27 blanco, reposado and anejo tequilas to the test. Unlike some wines, with their complex classification systems, tequila is simply categorised by age as follows: Blanco Don’t underestimate the power of good tequila to make it feel like summer.
