About this deal

Lateral CA shows as color fringing along lines of strong contrast running tangential (meridional, right angles to radii) with the mid and especially the periphery of the image circle showing the most significant amount as this is where the most significant difference in the magnification of wavelengths typically exists. The mount features a special sealing to make the lens an excellent choice in a wide variety of conditions. Outstanding Image Quality Returning to the 33 1.4 image wide-open once again at f1.4, let’s head into the corner where you’ll see the lens remains impressively sharp with only a little darkening due to vignetting. Introduce the XF 35 f2 on the right and you’ll immediately notice how the cheaper lens is noticeably softer in the corners than its pricier and newer sibling. Close the 33 1.4 to f2 and its result improves even further with a mild boost in sharpness and a lifting of the vignetting. Close both lenses to f2.8 and you’ll see the cheaper 35 f2 on the right improve a little but remain well behind the 33 1.4 on the left. So while both lenses share similar sharpness in the center of their frames, the 33 1.4 takes the lead in the corners at large apertures.

Size wise, I would say the 30mm f1.4 is about average. F1.4 lenses tend to be larger than their smaller aperture counterparts for obvious reasons but with that said, it’s similar in size to Fujifilm’s own 50mm equivalent lenses. The 30mm f1.4 measures 2.6 x 2.9″ / 64.8 x 73.6 mm, and has a 52mm filter thread. In comparison, Fujifilm’s own XF 35mm f1.4 measures 2.56 x 2.16″ / 65 x 54.9 mm, and also has a 52mm filter thread. Their 33mm f1.4 measures 2.6 x 2.9″ / 67 x 73.5 mm, and it uses a 58mm filter thread. Overall, the size of the 30mm f1.4 is reasonable for an APS-C lens of this focal length. It’s something that is easy to carry around all day, and live with on a daily basis. I say daily because for all you 50mm lovers out there like me, this is something that you can leave on your camera 99% of the time, especially since it’s also not that heavy. Using a neutral density filter is a good solution to retaining the use of f/1.4 under direct sunlight when the shutter limitation is exceeded. No dedicated aperture ring, which is just a personal preference, and doesn't affect the lens performance in any way at all. No OIS, but again, due to the compact size and weight of the lens your camera IBIS will take care of this. Final ThoughtsNo lens case is included in the box, but finding a case for a common lens form factor is not challenging. Now let’s compare the Sony 24 at f1.8 where it looks a little faster overall in Single AFS mode, mostly due to less of a wobble to confirm. Meanwhile switching to continuous AFC mode speeds-up the process and eliminates the wobble again due to the AF system exploiting the phase-detect system.
