About this deal

For the Prose and Verse Literature component learners study Latin set texts, learning to answer questions in English on aspects of content and to respond to the ancient literature they have studied. The Prose and Literature element constitutes 25% of the final examination. The CLC E-Learning Resources on DVD funded by the Department for Education and Skills, and produced in conjunction with Granada and CUP, the CLC E-Learning Resources on DVD each provide 1,000 electronic activities, including specially commissioned videos, for CLC Books I and II. Links to free online commentaries on Cicero, Tacitus and Virgil, useful for Latin students in Years 12 and 13. Teaching Classical Languages A companion to Bloomsbury's popular two-volume Greek to GCSE, this is the first course for Latin students that directly reflects the curriculum in a clear, concise and accessible way. Enhanced by colour artwork and text features, the books support the new OCR specification for Latin (first teaching 2016) as well as meeting the needs of later students, both at university and beyond.

With a 50 year history of development and revision, the Cambridge Latin Course (CLC) has established itself as the leading beginner's course for Latin. In addition, both Eduqas and OCR examination boards endorse the Cambridge Latin Course for GCSE teaching.

Classical Civilisation

This course offers the Prose B option, based on material from the Cambridge Latin Anthology (available to access online). This focuses around two texts, one from a writer from the second century AD, the other from two centuries earlier. The second text is an account by Pliny the Younger of the daily working habits of his uncle, Pliny the Elder. Written by two experienced school teachers, one also an examiner, the course is based on a keen understanding of what pupils find difficult, concentrating on the essentials and on the explanation of principles in both accidence and syntax: minor irregularities are postponed and subordinated so that the need for rote learning is reduced. User-friendly, it also gives pupils a firm foundation for further study. The first text is from the historian Tacitus, writing about the scandals, crimes and eventual downfall of the Emperor Claudius’ third wife, Messalina.

A Guide to Latin Pronunciation, an Introduction to Latin Verse, recordings of passages read in Latin and links to short films in Latin.
