About this deal

The Milner's Tower was built in 1871 by the residents of Port Erin in honuor of William Milner, a Liverpool safemaker. Unlike some special commemorative issues of the 50p coin, this one was only produced in rather limited quantity. The coin was to honor the Island’s most famous landmark which had been built in William Milner’s honor, named Milner’s Tower.

It is always great to find the 2003 Women’s Social and Political Union 50p with a mintage of 3,124,030 as it is pretty hard to find. Milner was a safe maker from Liverpool who made numerous charitable contributions to the people of the Island. Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS is a British sculptor who has produced many acclaimed works, among which are several designs for British coinage. He also contributed to building a church and helping the local area survive and thrive long after the mines had closed. I noticed the Royal Mint has no mintage for the 2015 50p Royal Shield – 5th portrait, what’s up with that?

Around the top of the coin are the words MILNER’S TOWER and the Isle of Man three-legged symbol on each side. million Jemima Puddle-Duck 50p coins were struck, making it the second most scarce commemorative 50p design (excluding the Olympic 50p series) !

Hi David, well done for spotting this, if you have a read of the blog, we mention that this was intentional due to it being a definitive design and not commemorative, you can also see the mintage figures. Most definatives were minted in very high numbers but the point is, for fun collectors, to look for those rare definitive years and if you include them then you will only increase the interest! What differentiates the Milner's Tower 50p piece from all other similar coins is its depiction of the tower on its reverse side. There are tiny marks on the reverse side of the coin that will distinguish it from other coins made in the same year. Still, it is designed in the style of the 50 pence coin with a 7-sided shape that forms an equilateral curve heptagon. This logo is the famous three legs of Man that is part of the royal coat of arms for three kings of the Isle of Man, whose realm at the time included the Hebrides in the Western Isles of Scotland.The total mintage of the Milner’s Tower 50p Coin that entered circulation was low, and the exact total is unknown.
