Many of our larger filter coffee machines have the function to brew smaller amounts of coffee, 2-5 cups, whilst maintaining the great taste of a full batch. This feature is called AromaControl and only uses half the power to create the same full flavoured perfectly brewed coffee. This function is great for households with varying coffee needs. When narrowing down which filter coffee machines to consider you can first look at the type of coffee machine jug that will best suit your needs. Glass jugs are the traditional and most common type of jug, these give great visibility of the coffee in the pot but are prone to breaking if dropped or damaged. Stainless steel coffee jugs however will not break and have the added benefit of keeping your coffee warmer, although most filter coffee machines do also include a heating plate to keep coffee warm. It’s larger than most machines but doesn’t feel bulky. Instead its design allows the water tank to be easily removed for filling, and the filter holder to swing out from the main unit so adding grounds and discarding them afterwards is straightforward. This is the filter coffee machine you’re probably most familiar with. Fill the tank with water, pop a paper filter and ground coffee in and turn it on. More affordable machines use glass jugs and keep them warm with a hot plate underneath, while pricier models swap the glass pot and hotplate for an insulated jug. These tend to be the cheapest automatic machine, but the quality of coffee produced is variable. 2. Pour-over machines Filter coffee machines are the classic way to create great tasting clean and crisp coffee. These machines heat up water to the right temperature then slowly pass this water through the coffee grounds and into the jug to create a delicious brew. The downside is that while it’s made from durable BPA plastic, you will have to clean it by hand and not in the dishwasher. However, as a portable and uncomplicated route to great filter coffee it definitely deserves its name.

While they look like drip-brew machines, these work by automating the more involved coffee-making process of the manual pour-over drippers. Rather than constantly dripping hot water over the coffee like cheaper machines, pour-over models dispense water more gradually over the coffee grounds. Some deliver water initially to allow the coffee to ‘bloom’ before dispensing the rest. The process takes longer but results in a more flavourful cup. 3. Grind and brew machine Plunge slowly and steadily, holding the handle with one hand, and the plunger with the other. Don’t plunge too fast or some of the grounds can escape the strainer, or the coffee can spurt out of the spout. For those who want the freshest cup of filter coffee with the least effort, a grind and brew machine may be the answer. These come equipped with an integrated bean hopper and grinder that will produce ground coffee on demand, depositing it directly into the filter basket. Most allow you to adjust the grind from fine to coarse so you can vary the strength and flavour, or you can still use pre-ground coffee. These machines tend to be a little pricier, though. 5. Manual drip coffee maker You should use coffee that is ground to a medium coarse setting. If you are familiar with the feel of various coffee grounds it should be finer than a cafetiere setting and coarser than an Aeropress or Moka pot.Add the coffee to the base of the heatproof jug – 1 tbsp per cup you want to make. This is about 7g, so for an 8 cup cafetière you need 50-60g (depending on how strong you like it). You can weigh this out on digital scales or using a measuring spoon. If you’re not filling the whole cafetière (making 8 cups), use 125ml water per 1 tbsp coffee ground for every cup you want to make. Taste - There will be a difference in taste, moreso body of the coffee. A paper filter will stop many of the soluble oils entering the coffee as well as any fine grounds reusulting in a cleaner cup which is great for lighter roasts or more complex coffees. A permanent filter is usually stainless steel or plastic with tiny holes. The end result will be a more full bodied coffee which is great if you’re a fan of rich darker notes in your brew.
