This is one of the main reasons I was particularly drawn to this book, as I was born and raised in Devon, and it's wonderful to see how it is documented through Roger Deakins' eyes. Deakins talks about why he gravitates to black and white photography, the inspiration for his book and shares his thoughts on iPhone photography.He has been nominated for an Oscar 15 times and won the award twice for the films Blade Runner 2049 and 1917. His career accolades also include two Independent Spirit Awards, numerous critics’ awards, and the Career Achievement Award from the National Board of Review.

With black-and-white images, the viewer looks at the content and the composition of the light more than anything else. Renowned for his collaborations with some of the most distinguished directors of our time, Deakins has, over the years, bestowed his unique vision on such celebrated titles as The Shawshank Redemption , Fargo , A Beautiful Mind , Skyfall , Blade Runner 2049 , and 1917 . However, for Deakins, photography has often been a solitary endeavor, an antidote to the ‘enjoyable’ yet intensely collaborative process of working on films. There is, however, a keen sense of light and line and how a scene can go beyond its simple components to become resonant.
