Aisling especially was the bright spot in the book, feisty and full of life. Though Maeve Binchy ranks high in my list of Top authors, this one was not really my cup of tea. I would much rather recommend reading one of her other works such as, “Evening Class”, “Circle of Friends”, or “Quentins”. On the other hand, it is an easy to read and somewhat enjoyable book so if you have nothing better to do (like me) then I say, go for it! Any issues with the book list you are seeing? Eventually, I realised that it wasn’t that kind of story and I became immersed in the engaging saga of two women’s friendship. Hi, I love, love Maeve Binchy’s books. You write that her novel “How About You” was made into a film. I do not see a novel listed with that title. Was it retitled from another novel? Thanks Reply

Though the characters are captivating and enjoyable he book gets bland and uninteresting near the end. It feels like you are forcing yourself to read, the characters lose their charm and the prose drags on. I feel that because this is Binchy’s first novel she is still inept at writing endings and so drags it out and also makes the Aisling and Elizabeth (the protagonists) seem out of character. The characters felt incredibly real and as if I could go outside and meet them in the flesh if I just walk around the corner. Each character interacted believably with both other characters and the environment. Each character is flawed and human and the problems they face give further credibility to the characterization. Their motivations were always clear even if you as the reader disagree with their decisions (as I did frequently), you can still understand why they do what they do. The protagonists are teenage girls and they feel like teenage girls. As we watch them grow through the prose, we also witness the evolution of their personalities as they grow. It is fascinating to see the progress of their characters and the journey they go through. Themes My candles are all hand poured in small batches in the confines of my kitchen. As a result, my house always smells joyously perfumed.However, friendship is ruined when Nan attempts to use Eve’s family connection to her advantage. The story of sour relations continues when these characters grows old venturing into real working life. It was Binchy’s in depth understanding of human nature that amazed her reader. I vaguely recall that in some Catholic churches it was possible to light a candle as a sort of prayer of sympathy for someone - perhaps even yourself. You'd put a coin in the box to pay for the candle. Perhaps the larger the candle the greater the cost. Maybe some of our contributors who grew up around that sort of thing could say.

This is Binchy's first published book, and it's a wonderful debut. Character-driven, the slow-burn narrative was difficult to put down, which is surprising for its length. I never knew where the story was heading next, but I was excited to find out, and it's making me glad I've got so much more Binchy to work my way through.Ten-year-old Elizabeth White, shy and fearful, is sent from war-torn London to stay with the O’Connor family in Ireland and there she begins a life-long friendship with Aisling. There’s a glorious cast of characters, and a rich and absorbing narrative. If you haven’t read it there’s a treat in store. And if you have read it already, I promise you, it’s just as good the second time around. And the third. And the fourth… Elizabeth White is sent to live with her mother, Violet’s childhood friend, Eileen O’ Connors who has large family. Elizabeth becomes friend with Eileen’s daughter Aisling. As both girls are of same age, they love each other’s company and grow into young women. I have effusively praised Light a Penny Candle to many people. I would have given it five stars in 1995 when I first read it. Now that I read it again, I can give it only three stars. Why?

Imprecise costuming adds to a surprising sloth in director Peter Sheridan's approach, beginning with those infallible indicators, the ill-fitting wig and the weightless suitcase. The comings and goings demand suitcases but surely none so buoyant as these? A soldier dies a death as prolonged as an opera, a set of piled-high windows by Maree Kearns blushes scarlet to herald doom and then flares with many candles to signal rescue. Although Binchy deserves better a play so dependent on dramatic cliche will be a great success.
