About this deal

I was thoroughly impressed by the author’s thought-provoking and timely insights on the state of the British legal system. For example, if someone slaps you and your response is to shoot them, then you’d struggle to convince a jury that you acted reasonably. Even when attacking the idiots at Whitehall or Fleet Street, SB is gentle, speaking gracefully but never with diminished force. Their writing has appeared in such publications as the Guardian, the Times, and Esquire, and their first book, The Secret Barrister, was a Sunday Times best seller.

Where a defendant pleads guilty, it means that he is accepting having committed a criminal offence in the way alleged by the prosecution. It's particularly concerning to read about how fake law facts have ended up quietly restricting people's access to justice. The main premise of this book was to dispell myths about law often shared in the news, media, social media and my members of government themselves. It's not easy to explain concepts like hearsay in layman's terms successfully, but the author manages this with ease and provides the reader with appropriate context. What came out in court but not in the media which played up the sympathetic angle, was that he lay in wait for them.The debate scrutinises how fake law can become an emotive subject on child euthanasia and how political and public misbehaviour take advantage of this reaction by challenging unpopular legal judgements which brings into question the validity of our judicial process. g.) such as those who wanted to kill the two 10 year old boys when they were found guilty of killing 2 year old James Berger in 1993.

I was particularly fond of the section on anti-discrimination legislation and the socio-economic impacts of constraining the operation of the law. Moral of the story, The Star, Daily Mirror and Daily Express should not be allowed to exist (110% behind this) and politicians fabricate everything regarding the law.Or, for some of them, parroting because although they don't believe in it themselves, they don't want to face the social consequences from their group or and educational establishment or work, if they speak out or even remain silent themselves. The language is quite technical from the outset and about halfway through the book, my eyes simply refused to read any more. The anonymous ‘Secret Barrister’ is back with another hard-hitting and surprisingly emotional roller-coaster ride of a book about exactly what’s going wrong in law.

Crime does get a look in, quite late in the book, and surprisingly (given that TSB is a criminal practitioner) I found that the most pedestrian and weakly argued chapter. I made pages and pages of notes on this book in preparation for writing this review, and there are so many more things I could say, but I run the risk of getting on my personal hobby horse, rather than writing a book review, and The Secret Barrister rides this hobby horse with much more elan than I ever could, so you should just read the book for yourself. The Secret Barrister has written for the The Times, The Guardian, New Statesman, iNews, Esquire, Counsel Magazine and Solicitors Journal, and has appeared in The Sun, The Mirror and Huffington Post. In the UK, if you get prosecuted for shooting an intruder and you get a sympathetic jury, then you're acquitted, if you get one that isn't even with all facts the same and no one offering a different version of events, then you go to prison!This is the usual police defence when they murder someone or other, especially minorities whom they are always certain were threatening them with (non-existent) guns. Although, it is also possible that the corruption of the process may finally attempt to change the decision which is notably influenced by external views opposed to those of the courts. It's highly addictive to get core insights on personally relevant topics without repetition or triviality. The day a judge makes a binding decision affecting the rights and liberties of one of us, not on the legal and factual merits, but with a nervous glance to the press and public galleries, or with a beady eye on political favour or punishment, is the day that the decay in our democracy turns terminal.
