another tiny note is that there are also lots of allusions to the dirtbag left / Red Scare scene which I felt ashamed of understanding so well— I really hope darcy wasn’t based on the decidedly non-lesbian dasha nekastrova. You may go into it thinking it’s a silly fun satire about nyc lesbians but in fact it is actually sick, twisted, and perverted.

Davis’s new novel reads like a taxonomy of queer theory, references, and history, while offering up wholly new words and takes on contemporary lesbian life. indeed, i kind of despised this book from the first page, and yet I slogged my way through it because as a Literary Lesbian I felt like I had to. Mediated by the Grinch filter, Sasha’s face was steely, its aspirational wickedness intercepting a darling, doe-eyed innocence. In Jenny Fran Davis’s novel Dykette, protagonist Sasha guards her high-femme identity so jealously from her rival and frenemy Darcy, it feels for all the world as if a gender quota has been issued on the Hudson, New York weekend estate where they find themselves. A hilarious, astute, and captivating tour of a young femme’s interior life over the course of one long weekend upstate.
