ARMENTROUT Another thing that really annoyed me was the romance between Rissa and Osrik. Not only was it completely underdeveloped and felt out of place within the story, it was also a repetition of everything we’ve seen happening between Auren and Slade in book 2. It was just the same thing all over again. Besides, it’s glaringly obvious how much the author hates sex workers and the treatment all of them get in these books from the narrative is just horrible. Rissa is, again, reduced to an object and her entire “story” revolves around sex, just as it did in the previous installments, only this time it’s labeled as freedom and her own choice. But let’s talk about that last Rip fact, shall we? We don’t talk about this enough collectively, in my opinion. People shout their praises that they love villains, the villain arc, the idea that sometimes bad guys can get the girl…and let’s be clear-Rip is NOT the villain, no matter what he says (lol), but he does some very twisted, very morally gray things that keep him from being classified a golden boy hero. My favorite thing, really- morally gray while ACTUALLY being morally gray– and without a hint of remorse, either. Be still, my beating heart. But, yes, Rip’s morally gray moments stem wholly from doing whatever it takes-and I’m talking whatever it takes- for those he loves. For those he swore to protect. For those he cherishes. For those that are too weak to do so themselves….and for Auren? The love of his life? He’d do whatever it takes… no matter the cost. You can quote Slade's dirty talk all you want, but for me, none of it countered the slog that was this book. I could not wait for the release of this book and had been counting down the days until I could immerse myself in this world again. Unfortunately, this instalment simply did not deliver.

I don't think I have the right words to convey the magnitude of the emotional suffering and joy this book had caused me and I wouldn't have had it in any other way. Book 5 of this adult fantasy series continues in this epic story inspired by the myth of King Midas, fae, and fated romance. After that massive cliffhanger from Gleam, I have been eagerly waiting for this next installment in the series. And overall, I enjoyed this story. However, as many have already stated, it was a filler book. There's nothing wrong with filler books. In fact, I believe they are necessary for most series longer than three books. So as far as filler books go, this was done well, but there were a few things that didn't work for me. Regret and revenge war inside of me, and I need to figure out a plan fast before I get tangled up in the schemes of kings and queens. Every male is either (a) rapey misogynistic ass that is insanely triggering to read or (b) secretly traumatized powerful tough guy.First, the positive: despite its flaws, this series is compulsively readable. I never want to put the books down, even when they annoy me. Like a phoenix caught fire, I will need to rise from the ashes and learn to wield my own power. Because my wings may have been clipped, but I am not in a cage, and I'm finally free to fly from the frozen kingdoms I've been kept in.

Return to the seductive world of magic inspired by the tale of King Midas, and get caught up in the world of Orea. Reading The Plated Prisoner series is like standing on the coast on a foggy day and watching the fog bank withdraw and reveal the beauty of the horizon. Your worlds starts small, but you know there is something more out there and the characters slowly come to realize it as well. It’s a beautiful unveiling that rewards the patient and dedicated. I know what you went through was horrible, but for what it’s worth, I am glad that you’re here in this world with me,” I say quietly. I’m now in a strange kingdom surrounded by liars, with no allies of my own, but I won’t sit idly by and let myself wither. No, there’s something that’s bloomed from the pit of my repression. Something dark. Something angry. The pace is slower than in the previous book, and Glow focuses more on fleshing out the characters than moving the plot forward, but I definitely think the character growth was necessary for the direction the last book will take. I just think that the middle part could have used a little more action.

Because these bars I’m kept in, no matter how gilded, are still just a cage. But the monsters on the other side might make me wish I’d never left. Suddenly, my trust is broken. My love is challenged. And I realize that everything I thought I knew about Midas might be wrong. This is one of those series that started off phenomenal, and only gets better with every subsequent book' - Laura Thalassa, author of The Bargainer Series The dirty talk during sex scenes. I've come to realize the way Raven Kennedy writes these is not for me. While the actual sex scenes are creative and unique (like the carriage scene 🥵), it's ruined for me by the dirty talk.
