Pond dyes are safe for both fish and wildlife, and usually provide around 2-3 months of color before needing a top-up. They will also help hide your fish from predators, as the dyes will make it much harder for flying animals, such as herons, to see your fish while overhead. Pond dyes won’t provide as much direct shade as plants or shade sails, but can be used alongside these options to help further control algae and reduce water temperature from UV light exposure. One of the very best things you can do for wildlife is create a water source. Our homes and roads were built over natural water points, so wildlife is always on the lookout for a drink or somewhere to breed in the case of frogs and dragonflies. Shallow ponds might benefit the most from the shade as they tend to warm up too much and too fast under direct sunlight. A shallow pond in some shade might even be able to support a small amount of fish and plants, provided all other conditions are met. The level of the surface will vary depending on filling height of the covered liquid. Similarly to geomembrane, remaining elements which are located on the edge of the containment basin will float in and out of the liquid to ensure uniform coverage.

Liner – butyl liners are the easiest way to create a natural-shaped pond. Pre-formed plastic or fibreglass ponds don’t usually have a shallow slope (see above), so you would need to add a ramp. For larger, natural ponds consider liners of puddled clay or sodium bentonite. Pond dye can be used in smaller ponds as well, but be advised, you’ll want to find a product specifically suited to smaller ponds. Don’t use a large pond product in a small pond as they’re often too concentrated. From a large pond, to a small butler sink, to a saucer of water your efforts will be instantly rewarded. Birds and insects will appear first followed by mammals and amphibians. The choice of design is mostly down to personal preference, with both plastic and mesh working well to shade a fish pond. A very versatile plant, water sprite grows just as well in full shade as it does in the sun, with a pH range of 6 to 8 and water temperatures between 20 and 26.6° C (68 to 80° F). A boon of growing in the shade, however, is that this growth rate is slowed somewhat. Another important note is that water sprite should not be incorporated into ponds with goldfish, as they find these little water ferns to be quite tender and tasty. A consequence of few plants in your pond is less oxygenation. To combat this, you will likely need to ensure your pond is using an electric pump or some other kind of water feature. What this will do is aerate the water in your pond and make sure that enough oxygen is available to prevent your water from stagnating. Like many ferns, mosquito fern does fantastically when placed in the shade and will be bright green; if planted in the sun, it will still grow well but its leaves tend to turn a more purple or red hue. It’s found naturally in moist woodlands where it has access to sun or partial shade with a couple of hours of sunlight. It grows well in slow-moving or still water, such as that of streams and ponds, where it can stretch out over the water and even trail over waterfalls. It’s able to double its area in just a couple of years. As such, fairy moss will need to be manually thinned out every two to three years. As I mentioned before, most pond plants require 4-6 hours of direct sunlight to reach their full potential, but there are plenty of plant types that can flourish in partial shade or 3-4 hours of direct sunlight.

For years I’ve suggested possibly using large umbrellas over very small ponds, or building a structure like a pergola or gazebo near the pond where doing so might provide some shade.
