Without Kate, everybody just fell apart, and most of the book is them bemoaning the fact that she’s dead. Tully is having a sort of out-of-body experience and Kate’s spirit is guiding her through her memories. Finally, it’s clear that after having Tully she suffered from postpartum depression, but again, it was not identified nor treated. Although this is still being used as a treatment today for severe depression, the way in which it was done in the late 50s and early 60s was barbaric! Hannah said: "Writing a "sequel" was the hardest thing I've done, and I do not relish the idea of trying it again.Hannah's sequel to Firefly Lane (2008) demonstrates that those who ignore family history are often condemned to repeat it. Fly Away was painful, but due to Hannah's compulsively readable writing style, I found myself flipping the pages despite the pain they put me through. I did enjoy the part of the story telling of Cloud/Dorothy's background, and what her life was like and why she was such a deadbeat mother to Tully, that was the only part of the book I found a little bit interesting, because in "Firefly Lane", we didn't read anything about Cloud's background.
